AbxZone.Com New Member's Guide and FAQ

AbxZone.Com New Member's Guide and FAQ

Ok…Inspired by new member, Abobo, I thought a guide to new members might be nice to have hanging around. So I’m going to give it a go here. There are official forum rules (here), but this is a layman’s version of what the Zone is all about.

Guide

1. ABXZone is all about computers, tweaking, overclocking, fixing, figuring out problems, etc…..
Not everybody is an expert on every topic, and some are newbies (and that is OK), so DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS (see No. 2).

2. ABXZone does NOT tolerate flaming.
ABXZone is VERY ADAMANT about respecting other members. FLAMING is NOT tolerated here. Mods will nip it in the bud and the members, especially those that have been around for a while will also quench it quickly.

3. ABXZone does NOT allow spamming/advertising.
Do not try to flood the boards with links to your website and ads about anything your are trying to push.

4. ABXZone does NOT allow linking to WAREZ websites or questions/threads relating to cracking software for illegal copying.
ABXZone can be shut down by authorities if this kind of thing goes on, so there is NO TOLERANCE for it.

5. ABXZone takes donations to keep it going, so if you enjoy it here, please consider donations. Here are a couple of threads related to donating to ABXZone.com.
Donations of Admiration
A do good, double cattywhomppuss

6. ABXZone is about building online friendships also. Feel free to post in the OT (Off Topic) forums.

Feel free to join in the non-sense, it doesn’t ALWAYS have to be about computers….join the fun. Say “hi” in the Goodnight Thread now and then. You can also tell a joke in the ”And on a lighter note..” thread. Or just start your own post in the OT forum and introduce yourself….we’ll give you a nice welcome.

7. Religious and Political topics are not allowed, even in the Off-Topic forum. There is a special “Heated Debates” forum for threads like that.
Even though threads can run hot in there, again refer to the above rule (NO FLAMING)….you still need to respect other members.

8. For making actual posts, ”Advice to Posters” is a good thread to help you ask in a way that makes it easier for people to help you.
But as a reference, let me sum up a few of the tips here.
a. Make the subject line meaningful…”help” or “need advice” are meaningless and does not entice someone to come in and see what the story is.
b. Post relavent system info if it is not in your profile. We can’t help with your hard drive problem if we don’t know what all is in your system.
c. Don’t get offended when somebody asks the “obvious questions” (like “is the cable plugged in tight). If you don’t mention it, then “somebody has to ask”. Many problems have been solved because somebody forgot something simple like that.
d. Don’t get annoyed if the question is not answered in 5 minutes….people are coming and going constantly and not everybody knows the answer (each of us has “areas” that wee are better at).
e. Before posting, use the search feature. Many problems may have already been posted here a dozen times and the answer may only be a search away.

9. DO NOT double post. Do not post the same question to more than one forum hoping it will be more likely to get responses. All posts go to the new posts area on the main webpage (good place to monitor the board from), so it will be seen. This is probably in the “advice to posters”, but it still happens so often, that it probably bears a special mention.

New Post Rules Added as of January 2005

10. Congratulations threads having to do with member post counts and birthdays will be eliminated from this day forward.
Although this was a major part of the community for some time, it was decided to eliminate this as too many members saw this as a way for some members to "inflate" post count.

11. In order to encourage our female members to participate and to ensure that our site remains a comfortable place for both men and women, sexist threads such as “Who is hotter?” type of threads are no longer tolerated.
No more of these immature threads. It is already hard enough making female members feel comfortable on a predominantly male tech website. These just make matters worse. This is meant to be a "friendly to all" forum.

12. Posting to intentionally discredit or in any way "bash" a moderator are not permitted.Remember our moderators are doing a job which is absolutely necessary; a job that in most cases is thankless and without reward. They do their job to help ABX and its members be the best and we’re extremely proud of their efforts.

Ok, now let’s play a little question and answer!

FAQ

Q. How do I get the little picture under my name that most people seem to have?
A. The picture is called an avatar. The avatar rules of the board state you must be a member for at least 90 days and have a minimum of 100 posts (both, not one or the other) to have an avatar. There are no exceptions, so don’t even try to get a mod to bend the rules…it won’t happen.

Q. How do I get an avatar, once I’m eligible?
A. You can use your own picture on your computer if you like, you only need to upload it. The picture must have a max size of 30,000 bytes and the size must be no greater than 60x60 pixels. There are many websites that have avatars you can use if you like, here are a few:
Three Stooges Avatars
Avatara
Hot Avatars
Kitty’s Avatars
Avatars Galore
Animation Factory
Need more? Just do a google search on “avatar”.

Q. When I am ready with a picture, how do I add/upload the avatar?
A. Go to the USER CP button at the top, and from in there click the edit options link. The bottom contains a Change Avatar button. Click that and it will give you a dialog to let you upload a file from your computer.

Q. How can I get a picture, like some have, that shows up at the bottom of my every post I make?
A. That area is called your signature. There is a size limit on your signature (Sig Rules linky). If you go to your User Control Panel and click on "edit signature" (left side), you will get what looks like a post editing screen. You can edit that just like a post, but it will show up as your signature. Don't ignore the size rules listed there.

Q. What is offlimits on ABXZone?
A. SPAM posting, Links to WAREZ, Links to PORN, pictures containing nudity, questions about illegal software copying for starters.

Q. Why is PORN off-limits? Aren’t we all adults?
A. NO, we are not all adults. ABXZone is a family friendly website. There are many members that are young and we have no desire to corrupt them.

Q. How do you make text bold, italic, different colors, etc… ?
A. You need to use the vBCode tags. Here is a nice explanation of how to use them.

Note: Although all this tag info is still correct, most of this info is obsoleted by the new rich text editor built in since the upgrade of VBulletin 3.

Q. Is there an easier way than try to remember all those codes?
A. You can use my (yes…pimping my own proggy) little fun helper program (vBCodeGenerator) which will convert RTF text to the vBCode text. It would allow you to, for example, type up something formatted nicely in MS Word (like I’m doing with this document now) and convert it to the right format to display the same way in a post. You can get the program HERE!. It does require the .Net runtime though which can be found here if you do not already have it on your computer.

Q. How can I make images appear in a post, right on the web page?
A. The board is powered by VBulletin software. There is a special code, called vBCode that is used for many possible “tricks” like that. The tags for displaying images is the IMG tag (not case sensitive). First, the picture you want to display must be on a web page somewhere so that it is linkable/displayable. Then you can make it appear by surrounding the URL to the image with IMG tags. Here is an example:
[img]http://this.web.address/filename.ext[/img]

Q. How do I attach an image or file to a post?
A. When you click post reply (or quote) to make your own post, you are on a post creating/editing screen. At the bottom (under the text window for you to type your post), there is a browse button. Note: the file you attach must be of one of the following extensions (gif jpg png txt zip bmp jpeg rar) and its size can not exceed 256000 bytes.

Q. How do I quote somebody else’s post in mine so that it is in a box with the “quoted by Username” header?
A. When you are replying to a post, there are two ways. You can click the “post reply” button, or under any post in the thread there is a quote button. The quote button includes (with header) the post you want automatically and gives you the new reply screen.

Q. I see a thread in which somebody is breaking the rules, how can I report them to a moderator?
A. Every thread reply also has a report button which will take you to a screen to report inappropriate behavior. If you report a post it will automatically notify a moderator.

Q. How can I create a poll?
A. Start a new thread in the forum of your choice. At the bottom of the thread creation/reply screen there is a checkbox that says “Yes, its a poll”. If you click that, once you click the submit new thread button it will take you to another screen with the number of options listed next to the “Yes, its a poll” checkbox. The next dialog allows you to type in choice and add/delete the number of choices.

Q. How can I have ABXZone email me if somebody responds to my thread?
A. Subscribe to the thread, by clicking the “Subscribe to this thread” link at the bottom right after you make your post.

Q. What is this folding thing I keep seeing mentioned?
A. Folding is a program to help medical research. ABXZone has its own team to join the fun of the race and help medical research at the same time. Rather than repeating all the info, look it up here!

Q. What are the little boxes under the avatar area for user members?
A. This is part of the reputation systems. There are also scale icons down further below that. These can be used to rate a user's post which adds (or subtracts) from their reputation points. It is a system to try to motivate helpful posting.

Q. What is the scale icon near bottom under a user's name/avatar area?
A. See question above.

Q. Where are the birthdays of users?
A. Not everybody has their birthday filled out (its not mandatory for obvious reasons). You must click on a user's name to go to their profile to see the birthday (if they listed it).

My hat's off to you, KT. This is a great post and should be helpful to all--new and old.

Now I have to put my hat back on. I'm bald and it's cold.
