Might want to check out an oppo player http://www.oppodigital.com/

As far as upconversion goes it depends a lot on the source dvd as well as the tv you are sending it to. Also depends upon what kind of chip is in the dvd player. The differences between how they do the upconversion is all over the place.

I have a panasonic S97 connected via HDMi to a samsung HLR6168. Upconverting to 1080i. I think it looks amazing. Yes, its not hidef, but the panasonic player was very cheap and it does a great job. I do encounter some macroblocking like everyone else does with this dvd player but for the most part its just fine. For its price its the best option out there.

A lot of times the massive amount of reading does more harm than good. Think about what your priorities are for the player. For me it was upconversion, speedy layer changes, responsive menus and the speed of the player itself were also important. I wanted a player that had a built in audio delay feature to help with lipsync problems. I also wanted a player that didn't have a problem with dvd-r's or DL burned dvd's. I also didn't want to spend more than $300. There is no perfect player out there (which boggles my mind since it would be rather easy to make one).

I've also come to the conclusion that all dvd players will have something that is wrong with them. About 99% of the posts you read about things that are wrong overshadow all the folks that think the player works just fine. You need to filter through the crap to the stuff thats really important. If you can take some dvd's to a store that has your tv on display and ask to see various players with movies you watch. Thats probably the best way to decide.

My main thing is compatibility with dvd-r and dvd+r, and ease of use, I think I found the one I want, now to find a good price, Thanks for all the Help....

I'd second that Oppo suggestion. People seem to love them. The Secrets benchmark scores for it arre way higher than you would expect for an inexpensive machine too.

fvbounty,

Check out the Samsung DVD-HD850. I purchased this one when trying to find an upconverting DVD player. I also like the panasonics very much, but for me this samsung was the better value. In my opinion upconverting in general is not noticable. I use the HDMI out to my 55" Sony HD and to me there is no difference. The biggest difference as someone here has already mentioned is the quality of the material on the DVD itself. Even the highest end DVD's still don't come close to HD tv, I love HD tv.
If you get the Panasonic you will definitly be happy with it!

Hope that helps
