yeah monoprice is the only place to buy cables...great prices and excellent products...that's where I bought my HDMI cables from...paying hundreds of dollars for a 'Monster' cable is a major ripoff

Re: I took the HDTV plunge!

I actually got a HDMI cable from Amazon along with the set. It was around $20 which seemed pretty cheap compared to the last one at over $100. BTW The set is shipped

I like the fact its 1.3 certified, Monoprice has a 5 inputs for $50, check out the link for the reviews, seems pretty good...

For only $42.53 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 5X1 Enhanced HDMI Switch with built-in Equalizer (REV.2.1) | Auto/Powered HDMI Switch

Re: I took the HDTV plunge!

I actually saw the set I am getting at Sears yesterday. They wanted about $300 more then I paid for it of course but man is that sucker HUGE! My girlfriend (whom I plan to keep it at her house) was freaking out lol. It does have a beautiful picture and now I never have a reason to ever get a job again They are talking about the 11th for delivery which seems a bit long to me especially since it is supposedly picked up already. It's being shipped by some company called "eagle" which I have never heard of before I hate the waiting game! Main reasons I want to keep it here is I'm here more then home anyway these days and her cable includes the HD channels and box with her service. I would have to order another box and the HD lineup separate at home. Now all I need is a dual format HD/blu-ray player, but I'm little tapped out right now..

Re: I took the HDTV plunge!

I took the plunge as well about 6 weeks ago with a Philips 42" LCD, Model 42PFL9732D/10. With 3 HDMI connectors, 1080p (1920 x 1080 resolution), 100 Hz (instead of the ususal 50/60Hz) and Ambilight Surround. The latter really is amazing. Interesting feature: I can upgrade the firmware of the TV set. I already did twice to the most recent fimrware version using the USB 2.0 connection.

I watched some 1080i (there is no 1080p broadcast yet) Cable channels and it is stunning.

Next is to buy me the Denon AVR-4308 Audio Video Receiver with 7 X 170 Watt amplifiers, RJ-45 (network) connector for Denon Link 3rd generation, 4 X HDMI input and 2 X HDMI output, a Wireless LAN for streaming included! It includes all goodies one could think of.

I also decided already for 7.1 speaker systems. The latter is a compromise yet. I know the speaker system, but not in a 7.1 configuration. So, this is going to be a gamble. I have no way to test it or listen to it. If it works as I expect, then it's an excellent costs/benefit reatio.

I also will buy me a new Denon DVD/CD player (for DVD Audio and SACD) DVD-2930, also with Denon Link 3rd generation (RJ-45 network connector) and of course a HDMI connector.

After that I will buy me the Humax iCord (unfortunately only with 1080i) digital satellite set top box with a 320 Giga HD included. Also includes an HDMI connector.

I wait though until a combi Blue Ray /HD DVD player is on the market.

I just gave away to a friend of my daughter all my (analog) stereo equipment including Bowers & Wilkins stereo speakers system. I decided to go all digital now and renew all the home electronics in the house.

Re: I took the HDTV plunge!

Well I finally got the beast, and that is the word for it! It is gigantic and beautiful to the point of obscenity. I love it!! I will post a couple pics once I get it settled in. Funny, it has been a point of contention between me and this girl I have been dating. Now there seems to be a Superbowl party planned and she stared at it with slack jawed fascination for hours last night

So far I completely agree with the reviews of this set (see initial post for model). The black levels are awesome and the plasma brightness beautiful. The only real downfall is the yellow levels. It is usually not apparent, but sometimes, depending on lighting, characters with have a slightly jaundiced appearance. I consider this a small thing given it's many other attributes. I LOVE the SD port for example. It is awesome for viewing pictures and the yellow problem doesn't seem to effect that at all. Another bonus is the sound quality. Truthfully I didn't give that portion much consideration figuring I would end up using a third party solution anyway, but it is very good IMO for built in speakers. In a word, BASS! It actually has some and produces booming sound where appropriate. In short, I would highly recommend this set to anyone even in the face of potential death threats from their significant others! Again I will post pics when I can. I am already shirking certain duties I had planned for today.

Re: I took the HDTV plunge!

SpeedDMN -- congrats & thanks for sharing your findings. Re the yellow emphasis, keep in mind that yellow is the complement of blue on the color wheel. So if there are any adjustments that allow color balancing on an rgb basis (either normally accessible to the user, or in the service menu if you ever get into it), a slightly increased emphasis on blue might resolve it.

Thanks for the congrats Where as the yellow problem isn't great, let me reiterate that it does little to take away from the set's overall quality. Unfortunately, several of the reviewers remarked on the lack of being able to adjust that particular color temperature, and was the unit's main downfall. Still I am very happy and impressed with it as a whole

Re: I took the HDTV plunge!

Well ok I have had the set for a while now and I can say I haven't got tired of it. I took some pics, but none really do it justice so it would be better for anyone that may want to view it to look at it online or at the store. I had a superbowl party around it yesterday and it was a lot of fun. The main problem with it is it's a big time brain slug. I feel like an older version of a kid wasting his mind on television. All the low def channels have lost all interest. I literally sat and watched dogs f*****g for about an hour on it the other day. I haven't got the electric bill yet, but I have a feeling it's gone up a bit. It has a 750W power supply plus the 3 90mm cooling fans in the back would seem to indicate it burns a little power. The screen actually stays quite warm. One good thing is it seems to repel dust. There was hardly a spec on it after weeks even.

Re: I took the HDTV plunge!

Now that you've had the set for a bit, I highly recommend getting an ISF calibration. I thought I had a great picture until it was properly calibrated, but now it's stunning.

It 's a little hard to swallow the initial cost, but the result is amazing and you have the satisfaction that the display is performing to it's utmost potential.

I personally recommend Gregg from LionAV. He services the Massachusetts area routinely as well.

There are some now, but the prices are quite high. You may not have to wait because from all indications Blu-Ray has achieved victory.
Several previously HD-DVD studios jumped ship last month, Blockbuster has decided to go with Blu-Ray exclusively and Toshiba has posted financial losses based partially on having to virtually give away HD-DVD players.

Here's an editorial from The Digital Bits titled "Stick a fork in HD-DVD. It's done" that has some interesting information.

We set up our new Sharp Aquos weekend before last and I am still amazed at what I am seeing and hearing.
One thing I didn't expect from going HD was the very noticeable increase in audio quality when running HDMI. Since the signal is uncompressed I should have expected that but it wasn't until I fired up the first Blade movie (my initial experience with HD) that I went "wow"...listen to that.
Then I started looking at it and couldn't believe it had taken me this long to make the move.
Dang, but it's beautiful. I can't even imagine what Blu-Ray must look like.

Blu-ray or hd-dvd won't give you the WOW like you get first going to HD tv does over SD, but with a good up scaling dvd player its still pretty impresive....the jump from upscaling to blu-ray to me isn't the same wow factor, my wife has to ask me if its a regular dvd or hd....
