LCD Monitor ??

My Birthday is comming up and I need a new monitor.

Is it time for an LCD? Moderate gaming, photo editing, general business use.

What's HOT? What specs are important? Brands?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Since you're gaming and photo editing.. a CRT would be the way to go. Better color distribution, although LCD are slowly getting there.

It used to be true that CRT's were so much better for gaming, but over the last 2-3 years there have been much improvements in LCDs when it comes to gaming. While a CRT is still probably the best at gaming on a PC. LCD are right there with them and after getting one I don't think I'll ever go back to CRT.

I would suggest one of the UltraSharp Dells. Those are some amazing LCDs and Dell doesn't really make them. I've also heard Samsung has some great LCDs out there.
Sorry I don't have any model numbers but if you do a search for LCD here at ABX you'll get some good hits with useful information.

I would highly suggest you read this link

http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/03/...cd_collection/

Here's an excerpt:

"Following this spate of tests, it is apparent that vendors are increasingly designing LCD monitors for specific applications. The last 100%-all-around monitor we've seen is the ViewSonic VP930, which we tested in previously. The others are either good at color rendering or are excessively fast.

Our preference still goes to the VP930, for its flexibility of use and advanced ergonomics, especially since the price has come down slightly since the model was introduced. Gamers should look to the ViewSonic VX922.

For photo retouching and content creation, we can't recommend the Samsung 970P enough. Its exceptional contrast and unmatched color fidelity make it the ideal companion for spending long hours in front of your screen."

bka4u2c you are correct that Dell does not make their own. In fact Dell for the most part uses Samsung components for their own LCD's.

Well, I've just junked 3 CRT monitors for Samsung Syncmasters.
I wont be going back to CRT but I will say that you must run the Syncmaster at its native resolution for the best view, in my case it's 1280 x 1024. Any other resolution is not good.

Buy an LCD - going with a Dell or a Viewsonic / Samsung will change your paradigm on monitors in general. You will be happy you did. Check techbargains.com for Dell deals. I am totally happy with the Dell 2007 WFP I am using - but don't call me a fanboy...

I'm very happy with my NEC20WGX2 20" widescreen 1680x1050 LCD, plays Quake 4 brilliantly.

Re: LCD Monitor ??

Go for LCD.. I have a Proview, which makes LCDs along the budget lines. I must say, I'm pretty impressed with the quality. I'm now on my second proview (Went from 17" LCD to 19" Widescreen), quality is great, no dead pixels, and both were affordable. ($180 back in 2004, and $229 in 2007).

Re: LCD Monitor ??

LCD all the way, I mean its an overall good buy over a CRT, they're just getting outdated. Just to save you money and me space Ill give you one of my old CRTs free if you're really considering sticking with them. JK Anyways, You have to look at the overall value of the switch like power consumption and other specifics.

Re: LCD Monitor ??

And when you have chosen your screen, you only have to invent a time machine and send it back 2 years into the past (so you can get it on your "upcoming birthday").

Honestly, you don't see any CRT'S anymore for sale in at the big markets. Seems that only small stores that specialize on professional screen do sell them nowadays (at least here in austria).

Greetings

Dru
