| Problems With DV Camcorder I use the IEEE 1394 port to capture video and it has worked without a problem for over a year. When I plugged it a couple of weeks ago the camera was not recognized by the OS (XP Pro) or by any capture software. I tried it on 3 different computers using 3 different cables and 2 different DV cameras, all with the same result (all three computers have the same Microsoft updates). A google search found a ton of people with the same problem, and most of it seemed to be related to Microsoft updates or to SP2, but I have not been able to isolate the problem to any one update. I have SP2 installed and it was not a problem when it was installed. All the computers I tested the camera on had IEEE 1394 enabled in the BIOS. I have tried everyting I know to do or have read about with no success (I even tried a registry hack). The last resort is to reformat and do a clean install, which according to many solves the problem, but I am reluctant to do that for obvious reasons. Any suggestions? |

| I have a DV camcorder. I haven't used it since Thanksgiving. Were the updates since then? Tonight when I get home, I will hook it up and check. Could it be a firewall thing? 1394 is considered a network connection.

| I was having trouble before Thanksgiving, and I checked the firewall issue. Not everyone is having the problem. I read about this issue sometime back and I was not having any problems at the time. I even looked on the windows update page at my update history to see if I could identify something, or at least approximate the time period when it first occurred. Most of the updates, according to Microsoft, can be uninstalled through the add/remove programs utility, but only one update/hotfix is listed in my add/remove programs list. Edit: I forgot to tick the "show updates" block. |

| What about re-installing the firewire adapter?

It is an on-board adapter and I have uninstalled the driver several times. That didn't work. Before I reformat I have a PCI adapter in a linux machine that I am going to install in this computer just to see if it will work. | |

| Sometimes the Texas Instruments drivers that are sometimes installed with the very common TI firewire chip conflict with the Microsoft firewire drivers. Any chance of that? |

| It is a VIA controller and according to their website the drivers are native to and supplied by the OS, so I don't think that would be the problem. |

| Here is what I have tried so far without success: Un-installed and re-installed the drivers 3 or 4 times Followed the instructions listed on the following website: http://www.rme-audio.de/english/techinfo/fw800sp2.htm Un-installed SP2 Re-installed SP2 Still cannot connect using IEEE 1394 port and I am getting to the point where I want to use the Realdieu method of dealing with things like this; destroy it all and start over. |

| My DV camcorder is working fine. Try removing the driver, disabling in bios. Reboot. Reboot again and enable in bios and see if XP detects it. Maybe you want to remove the driver in safe mode. Don't know.

| Just tried your suggestion, but it didn't work. I forgot to say that I reimaged the drive from an image that I had from when the IEEE1394 port was working. Still no go. I would be thinking it was a MB problem if the same thing wasn't happening on three other computers, and using three different cables and 2 different camcorders. It definitely has me stumped. |

| Re: Problems With DV Camcorder I have the same problem. I have a PV-DV203 Panasonic. I even purchased a new firewire card and still did not work. I am just wondering if it might be the port on the camera. The USB work, but can not capture large video with USB and does not work with video editing programs. I wish I had an answers also. I have a $500 paper weigh now. |

| Re: Problems With DV Camcorder I did a clean install three weeks ago and the OS still doesn't recognize the camera. I have to think now that it is a problem with my motherboard and not the OS. |

| Re: Problems With DV Camcorder Not sure what to suggest about BoWevil's problem (still going on after 2+ years!?), since it happens with multiple computers and multiple cameras. But Vdeish's problem could very well be a blown port on the camera, unfortunately. It's not uncommon for that to happen if the camera is connected to something through a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable (is that the case here?). The extra two pins on the 6-pin connector are used by many firewire interfaces to supply power to the bus, for use by other devices that have 6-pin connectors. If the connector is somewhat off-axis while being inserted, the power source can momentarily get applied to one of the signal pins, and damage the 4-pin port at the other end. Try the camera on a different computer, if you have not already. Regards, -- Al

| Re: Problems With DV Camcorder I wonder if it cost alot to get a port fixed on a camera, if it can be done. I am going to put a firewire card in my sons XPS computer and see if it works. Will keep you posted. |

| Re: Problems With DV Camcorder Well, I installed a new firewire card on my sons computer and the camcorder will only be detected plug into the USB port. It has to be the port on the camera. I guess I will check and see how much it cost to get the port replaced. |
