Z5500 & Audigy 2 ZS doesn't work with optical???

Hey guys!!

Just recentley purchased the Logitech Z5500 and i cannot seem to get it to work through an optical cable which i have just purchased!!?

I Have an Audigy 2 ZS soundcard and the optical cable is a 3M optical cable with a 3.5mm optical plug adapter. I have put the optical cable in the back of the control centre and the other end in the digital port of my sound card and when i switch the input on the control centre to "Optical" i recieve:

No Digital Data

What on earth?? I have even opened the on screen settings and switched the output to digital instead of analogue and still nothing!!?

Please help me guys! I want this to work so badly!!

Put a dvd in, open up powerdvd or windvd and set it to digital output, see if you get sound.

Can anyone help? Please i really want to get optical audio from this system? If the system says that their is no digital data, is this because i need something playing or it needs to be configured? or something else? Please help!?

When I got my Z5500's a little while ago I first used them with an Audigy 2 Platinum via the the digial coaxial out on the front of the live drive. I quickly discovered you'll only get stereo most times, and the Z5500 control pod has to detect the signal which causes a short delay before you actually hear sound. This was bad for short sounds, like the ones in Windows, as by the time the speakers detects a digital stereo signal and kicked in, the sound would be nearly to completely over. The only way to get digital 5.1 is to play something (like a DVD) that has pre-recorded digital multi channel sound.

Anyways, digital out only might have to be set in the sound cards mixer (or speakers settings, somewhere in there), spdif/digital out has to be set in your DVD player app, and possibly you may have to also go into the audio console for your sound card (that's what it's called for the X-Fi I'm now using anyways, can't remember the Audigy 2 name for it, should be in the control panel though EDIT: AudioHQ, see below) and set the option in the drivers that tells the sound card software to send a digital signal out instead of decoding it.

I just ended up using analog in the end, works better since it's the only way you'll have surround sound in games, as well as other options like 3D upsampling of 2 channel sterero sources via 3D-CMSS (which is really good IMHO). The only way to get digital surround sound on the fly and not pre-recorded is if you had a 5.1 encoder, and no Creative card comes with that ability I think.

Edit: Improved accuracy of text above, and added the name of the component I was thinking of (Control Panel>AudioHQ>Device Controls Icon>Decoder Tab).

If your using coaxial, the male miniplug that is needed to plug into the sound cards digital out port has to be mono and not stereo as far as I know. The other end should be a regular male RCA photo plug and be plugged into the female coaxial in port on the Z5500 control pod. The Audigy 2 ZS internal soundcard does not have optical out, so if you are using some kind of coaxial to optical adapter then that could certainly be the problem. I've gone over your posts and it is hard to make out exactly how you have things hooked up.

FWIW, Creative has never been all that good when it comes to driver support and getting the bugs out in a timely fashion, so this could also be your problem. Makes me question myself every time I buy a new product from them, yet I keep giving them my money lol. Anyways, the easiest way to make sure you have the latest software and drivers is to load up IE and use Creative's auto update feature on their website. You may also want to check out their forums, which I noticed the other day they have. They used to have newsgroups as well, but I'm not sure if they still maintain those or not.
