Z97-ws

In the past few days I got my hands on a new ASUS Z97-WS. Should be arriving after the holidays.

I decided to get the WS because I cannot afford to sell/write-off my compatible CPU's/Memory by switching to a new platform, i.e. 270. Currently I have two CPU's and two sets of RAM. Too much of a loss for only at best a 5% boost. I'm good for a lifetime! Especially with that PLX chip on the board  Anywho, saved a bundle going this route as opposed to changing chipsets.

Question:

Why the Intel 750 instead of a Samsung 960 Pro mounted on Angel Wings?

Congrats on the new board and I don't get the 750 over the 960Pro and a Anglebird...not even close to me!

Thanks FV. Yep, that's why I asked the question. Even with the additonal cost of the Angelbird, it's still cheaper overall.

I guess for me to have said it correctly, a Samsung 960 Pro mounted on a Angelbird Wings PX1.

Go for it Jim....and your right it is cheaper and a 5 year warranty, what's not to like!

Re: Z97-ws

My brother-in-law is traveling in Asia. Told him to keep an eye out for the ASUS Z97-WS. He found a few in either Shanghai or Bangkok. He knows PC's.

With the strong dollar it's going to cost me about $275 for the WS. Very easy for me to sell the Pro I have. Both the Pro and WS sell for twice their original amount new on Amazon even when available. I am ahead, at least in my mind anyway.

Plan to either do a quickie mobo swap and no refresh of the OS. Or be patient and wait for the 960 to be released and stabilized, and then do a fresh OS install on the 960.

Good plan, Great price on that MB....now a 30" oled monitor and we both will have our new upgrades!:tiphat::whistler::lol:

Just noticed reading the QVL I can even put a Xeon E3-1286 V3 in it. Forgot all about the Xeon's. 4790k benchies higher though!
Yeah, it's a good plan, but more important for me it's cheap and realistic!

Glad you mentioned the monitor. I have to hunt down a DP to DP cable. No more DVI on the WS. Only DP cable I have is a DP mini. Don't know where that came from.

Congrats on the new mobo Jim, I had this one and it is great. Should be rock solid with current BIOS. It is your call on the SSD, I would lean toward Samsung for a recommendation. I like the Intel myself and am not worried if it is the fastest on paper (it's not). I am using it and like it but the Samsung (which I've not had) will feel as fast and probably faster if that is possible. The Intel 1.2TB is a few shiny nickels thats for sure. Actually I just remembered, if you are in the 512GB market then it is no decision, you have to get the 960 Pro. The Intel 750 400GB and slower than the 1.2TB and too small IMO.

Re: Z97-ws

Thanks Sandog. For me the 512GB is more than enough.

Hope I have enough 3.0 pipes

4 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (dual x16 or x16/x8/x8 or quad x8)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x4 (x4 mode) *2
2 x PCIe 2.0 x1

Re: Z97-ws

I will look into your manual for you but you are also limited by the CPU that board uses. That is why I left the Z97-WS, my last mobo before HEDT. Anyway the worst that can happen is your video card will do 8X but you have to have the SSD on 4X and PCIe 3.0, not 2.0.

My old Z87-WS: :bawl:
4 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (dual x16 or x16/x8/x8 or quad x8)
2 x PCIe 2.0 x1

Re: Z97-ws

When the time comes I'll jam the Angelbird into a 3.0x16 slot and see what happens. If the GTX 970 runs at 8x, I'll just get a 1070. I believe the 4790K has a max of 16 lanes. I think the PLX chip splits that.

The Z97-WS is the best. It has four long 16X PCIe slots and they all can do PCIe 3.0. You may just have to disable the M.2 slot you won't be using but you should be able to run the video card at 16X 3.0 and the SSD at 4X 3.0.

The mainstream CPU only has 28 lanes so you can see the video card and SSD take up 20 of those. That leaves 8 lanes for everything else. Even on a 40 lane CPU like mine I do not have an excess of lanes and have to disable certain things in order to get the ports I want at 3.0.

You can configure/disable ports in BIOS and you will be able to determine if you video card is running at 16X 3.0 (GPU-Z) and if your 960 Pro is running at 4X 3.0 (Samsung Magician).

Yes, that is how you get the added lanes to the PCIe slots. The PLX chip is like a train track switch but the CPU still has only 28 lanes feeding into it. This is how I understood it all these years.

I found an article that should be a correct explanation, I have not read it.

Four Multi-GPU Z77 Boards from $280-$350 - PLX PEX 8747 featuring Gigabyte, ASRock, ECS and EVGA

Re: Z97-ws

Thanks Squid. I believe the reason I am able to do that is because of the PLX chip. No CPU designed for this board has more than the max of 16 PCiE lanes. Leaves me to conclude the PLX chip is the key.
