Intel Rolls Out "Light Peak"

Intel on Thursday [February 24, 2011] plans to roll out Light Peak, a high-speed connection technology that Apple is also likely to adopt, according to an industry source familiar with the details of the event....

Maybe not coincidentally, Apple is expected to roll out new MacBook Pros--and possibly other products--on Thursday.

Intel has been working on Light Peak for years and recently said the initial version would be based on copper, as time-to-market realities necessitate more conventional technology. Light Peak is significantly faster than even USB 3.0, carrying data at 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously. Connection speeds will not be affected by the transition to copper, according to Intel. In the future, Light Peak may scale to 100 gigabits per second, according to Intel.

That's nice, and now you have to buy new docks, external HD cases, new cables.....oh boy...NOT!

Not unless it has a dongle for my 6 thumb drives, 2 external HD, HD dock, external card reader.....and on and on....just like Apple to go to this and make all your older stuff not work! Build in absolution of perfectly good stuff....If you don't have a few extra seconds to transfer files?????????? That's why I like USB3.0 its faster but doesn't make all your older USB2 stuff absolute!

Well Apple came out with the new laptops and they have Light Peak but they also have USB too....so it's sort of like Firewire 800, they give you the choice!

Absolutely!

At least if the price is right. It will make my backups to external drives so much faster.

I just got the Asus USB3 card and BlackX USB3 dock.... always something new to spend more money on...
