Looking for a new router

Hi All,

I'm looking for a new router. Any recommendations out there?
I would like to have something with good reporting capibilities (Gota keep track of my kids), but it's not mandatory.

Thanks !

Re: Looking for a new router

I to am looking to buy a new router. I have my sites set on this one.
http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN56U/

I do not plan on using the Wireless part of this router ATT. Does anyone know if you use just 'wired' that you can turn off the wireless part?

Re: Looking for a new router

That looks like a very nice one. Asus is a brand to trust. After that I like D-Link products.

Re: Looking for a new router

I was going to buy a new one myself. Took a chance and asked TW if I could get a "free" modem. They came through with a Motorola Surfboard. Very fast!

Yes you can turn off the wireless radio in the router, at least you can in my D-Link 655, which is a great gigabyte router too!

Re: Looking for a new router

Thanks FVB, that is what was keeping me from buying it. I wanted to use it with my laptop and maybe Netflix later but I also want the ability to not have it radiating if I am not using it.

Re: Looking for a new router

Just ordered the ASUS wireless router, comes with a 1yr NET warranty ($15 value for free). Also got the BIOSTAR cable (USB 3.0 for mobo) and a fresh tube of MX-4.

Re: Looking for a new router

That router looks nice. I like the fact that it has 2 USB ports. I've been looking at the Linksys E4200 V2, but it only has 1 USB port. What I would really like is the E4200 V2 or the Asus RT-N66U, bu with 2x USB 3.0 ports.

Re: Looking for a new router

This is a great router, I updated the firmware and utility a couple of weeks ago and now it is even better. I highly recommend this router to anyone.

The top screen is the old interface that came with it and the grey/black screens show the new interface. I like the new software, I'll see how well it works with an iPad and Roku soon.

Looks like that firmware update was like getting a whole new device.

Re: Looking for a new router

Not much point in buying any new router that isn't 802.11ac compliant right now (AKA SuperN, Gigabit Wifi).

FWIW, Comcast is going to get rid of all coax in the house and use 802.11ac within the next couple of years for delivering services within homes (a coax cable with connect with an 802.11ac capable wireless router for phone, internet and TV).

Is that everywhere in the USA?

Re: Looking for a new router

The ASUS RT-N56U does 802.11n and it does 2.4/5GHz simultaneously. I have the iPad connected on the 5G network and the Roku connected on the 2.4GHz network. Both work perfect and the iPad is just as fast as my DT computer. 802.11a/c does 5G @ 500MB, mine does 5G @ 300MB. It is very adequate for now. I can even hook up my wireless printer to the router and there are 2 USB ports as well.
