Suggestions for new rig

Howdy,

I'd like to update my machine (the one in my signature) since it's going and it's been about 10 years. I have a budget of about 1000 bucks. It doesn't need to be a rocket ship but I'd like it to have moderate gaming power and last for several more years. I'm basically looking for motherboard, processor, video card suggestions for items that are at the sweet spot between performance and price. I'm going to get Win 7 Home Premium 64, and would be interested in an SLI setup for the video cards (if that's still the way to go). Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Your going to need a new case and RAM.
1. Corsair 500D
Newegg $139.99 + $12.99 shipping.
2. Corsair HX650 Power Supply
Newegg $104.00 after rebate/ free shipping.
3. ASUS P8Z68 DELUXE/GEN3
Newegg $168.99/ free shipping.
4. Intel Core i7-2600 Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz
Newegg $294.99/ free shipping.
5. Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Newegg $109.99/free shipping.

Total: $830.95

This is what I recommend and I would let you choose your video card. The last series from ATI/Nvidia are good and the new series will be over $400. You won't need SLI/Crossfire with one of the newer cards. I recommend an NVidia GTX 670.

Re: Suggestions for new rig

I recommend two options:

Higher performance/longevity/price:
  • An Asus Z77 motherboard (your choice, depending on the features you want and the price you're willing to pay)
  • Intel Core i7-3770K CPU
  • 2x 8GB Corsair 1600 Vengeance RAM
  • EVGA or Asus GTX570 video card
  • Any big name brand SATA III, ~120GB SSD
Lower performance/longevity/price:
  • An Asus Z77 motherboard (your choice, depending on the features you want and the price you're willing to pay)
  • Intel Core i5-3570K CPU
  • 4x 4GB Corsair 1600 Vengeance RAM
  • EVGA or Asus GTX560Ti video card
  • Any big name brand SATA III, ~240GB SSD
Either way, you will have a system that is light years ahead of what you have now and will still be a capable system a few years from now.

Re: Suggestions for new rig

Thanks for the recommendations. I was leaning towards AMD for the lower price. Obviously you guys prefer Intel. I'm planning on an solid state drive as Peter suggested. Any AMD/mobo suggestions?

Sandog-I do have a relatively new 550w power supply? Would I still need a new case? Sorry if dumb question.

Re: Suggestions for new rig

A relatively new, good quality 550W ATX PSU and a standard ATX case should be OK, especially for the lower price option I provided.
The price/performance of AMD just doesn't make sense these days, especially considering how much better the Intel CPUs perform and the fact that you are willing to spend ~$1000 and want a system that will last a few years. If you wanted to build a low end system, then there are AMD options to consider, but not for a mid to high end system.

I think a new case would go good with a new system. They have drastically changed. Also you mentioned you might SLI later so that was why the 650W PS but you could do with a 500W with a single video card.

Thanks for the clarification. I may just stick with my Coolermaster 550 for now and upgrade if I buy a second video card.

I didn't know the cases changed much but I like the idea of a new one (my last 2 builds were in this old beast). Do you know if the usb plugs would be compatible with USB 3? Again, price will be a factor...

No, they will not. If you want USB 3 ports on the case, you'll have to get a new case.

I update cases regularly lol and to me the newer cases are a must have. You said yours is 10 yrs old? I would definitely upgrade the case. You will not be sorry. It is a small investment but an overly critical component in a new system. The air-flow abillty, cable routing, mobo tray access, filters, and front USB 3 ports which plug into the USB 3 mobo header. No, USB 2 in not compatible with USB 3. USB 3 uses 8 wires, USB 2 uses 4. USB 3 is backwards compatible though.

Re: Suggestions for new rig

Well I did the math and I didn't see how I could afford a Intel system for $1000. I think I need new everything so Intel isn't an option for my budget. I also decided that the solid state drive is a priority over gaming. Here's what I came up with. I'd be open to suggestions.

Asus M5a99X evo $135
AMD Fx-4170 4.2 quad am3+ $130
Saphire amd radeon hd 6850 $150
2x 8GB Corsair 1600 Vengeance $53
Soild state drive Crucial 256 gb $203
WD Cavier Blue 500 gb SATA 55$
Corsair Carbide $90
Lite-on lightscribe DVD $25
Win 7 HP 64 single install $100
Corsair Enthusiast 650 fan $90
