Are websites heading towards the Windows 8/tablet format?

For my daily news I've used NBCnews.com (formerly MSNBC.com) for years. They have changed their format to look like the larger Windows 8 boxes. I hate it! I've tried to use it and finally gave up and started going to ABCnews...

Re: Are websites heading towards the Windows 8/tablet format?

Thats actually funny. I can almost feel the desperation behind it, as they try to find a format that works.

Theres no right/wrong or best practice around this IMO. They're all struggling to attract and maintain readers.

The only precedent we have is newsprint that was around for a while before the web. I think those had a kinda combination of tiled/menu layout which was largely a function of the sheet size and sponsor ad size.

I still believe content rules. I'm so sick of news sites shifting over to opinion and sensationalism. I dont even bother to view more than the headlines now, the rest is frequently crud.

And those sites that try to calculate my viewing "preferences" are the worst. One day i get served all kinds of stories related to education, the next investment, the next IT, the next soft porn all depending on some calculated average of what i viewed the day before.

I read some article on project management months ago somewhere and now I'm getting banner ads on multiple sites about project management training for gods sake, ridiculous!

Seriously, they have to get back to basics and rethink the scope of topics/subjects they cover/specialise in? what level of detail? Accuracy? And so on.

The impact of all this is that we're less informed than ever on the important stuff or it takes longer to find it.
