Firefox 29: "Most Customizable Firefox Ever" -- NOT!

For those who use Firefox and have not yet updated to the recently released version 29, I thought I'd call to your attention that it is a lot more than a routine stability and security update. You can read about the changes at Mozilla.org and elsewhere.

I also want to call to your attention a major pet peeve I have with it, which for the time being has caused me to revert to version 28. Ironically, although version 29 is described as "the most customizable Firefox ever," the location of the refresh button can no longer be moved. For my purposes its location at the right side of the address bar, far away from the "back" and "forward" buttons, is often extremely annoying, and necessitates a lot of what should be unnecessary wrist action.

In the past I have simply relocated that button to the left of the address bar, but that is no longer possible, at least without installing a "classic view" add-on I've seen mentioned on the web.

I realize that this is not among the most major issues facing the world today, but I (and many others who have posted about it in various places on the web) find it to be a significant annoyance.

Best regards,
-- Al

Al,
I am also annoyed with the position of a non-movable object in v29, but mine is the back button.

edit: And, that the new Bookmarks object (star) can not be separated from the Bookmarks object or removed.

Why do changes made to UI's keep getting stupider and stupider?

Answer: More and more morons are doing things.

I'm glad to hear that people are posting all over about how ridiculous the claims are about these updates. Better security yes; but never never ever ever change the UI because some one out there likes it or they would have complained about it. Instead there are complaints about the stupidity of the changes. If the changes are really better than it will be discovered by each user as they have the time for it.

I mistakenly updated FireFox yesterday. Now I have to find v.28 somewhere.

Trav, fyi what I did (running Windows 7) was first to do a system restore to a time prior to when I updated to v.29. That got me most of the way back to v.28 as it had been, except that the back, forward, stop/refresh, and home buttons displayed as icons + text, even when "icons only" was selected in the view/toolbars/customize menu. (And selecting "icons + text" resulted in the text appearing twice!)

I resolved that issue by deleting the "Mozilla Firefox" and "Mozilla Maintenance Service" folders in c:\Program Files (x86), and replacing them with the corresponding folders I extracted from a disk image I had created a few weeks ago. In doing so I encountered a permission problem when I tried to extract directly to that location, so I extracted to "My Documents" and copied from there to the program files folder.

Alternatively, of course, I could have just restored that image and re-done a few updates and program installations I had done since the image was created, as well as restoring data from backups.

Best regards,
-- Al

Re: Firefox 29: "Most Customizable Firefox Ever" -- NOT!

P.S. to my last post: I also made sure to turn off Firefox's automatic updating feature, under Tools/Options/Advanced/Update.

Best regards,

Re: Firefox 29: "Most Customizable Firefox Ever" -- NOT!

And I just discovered that I can no longer edit the name of a Bookmark when I save it, nor put it in a particular folder. When you click the "Bookmark Star", a name is auto generated and the bookmark is saved in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder, w/o any user interaction. So, now every time I bookmark a page, I then have to go find the bookmark, edit it and move it.

Re: Firefox 29: "Most Customizable Firefox Ever" -- NOT!

I'm using Firefox ESR 24.6.0 without the Australis (google chrome knock off) garbage.

Once Firefox 31 and Firefox ESR 31.x.x are out, it's safe to say users will slowly drop using Firefox and switch to another browser
