Windows 10 fails to install.

Windows 10 fails to install on my PC desktop. It did install easily on a laptop.

The desktop has 16GB ram a large Intel processor and over 3TB SSD capacity.

The error message reads:

0X800Y70004-0X2000D
The installation failed in the SAFE-OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation.

Any suggestions?

Re: Windows 10 fails to install.

I assume you are attempting to upgrade through Windows Update. You could try downloading and installing outside Windows Update. Here's how:

Re: Windows 10 fails to install.

Thank you Peter.

I just tried your recommendation. Got to where it asks for product key. I input the Windows 7 product key THAT IS VALID, but the Windows 10 installation program rejects it.

Double checked the key with a third party app and it was the same as the one I had used for the Windows 10 installation.

So, I am stymied. Cannot get past this product key point.

Re: Windows 10 fails to install.

Read this page which is linked to on the page I posted earlier:
Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help

Excerpt:
"If you upgraded to Windows 10 on this PC by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 on this PC in the past, you won't have a Windows 10 product key, and you can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer."

Re: Windows 10 fails to install.

Thank you for your assistance. I do appreciate it.

I have not received notification for my GET WINDOWS 10 to download as yet.

While waiting, I downloaded Media Creation Toolx64.exe from the Microsoft website. I used it to install for the first time the upgrade of Windows 10 Pro on my desktop PC.

Therefore, the install program asked for a product key and I gave it the one and only one for my originally installed Windows 7 Professional sp1. It rejected the key.

Re: Windows 10 fails to install.

I used the ISO to flash/USB drive method. Then ran the W-10 ISO file
in windows 8.1, it worked without a hitch. This was done using the media creation tool...

When you do the 'in place upgrade' (whether through Windows Update or the media), you do not need to enter a key. It will NOT accept your Windows 7 key.

Re: Windows 10 fails to install.

I did not give up. Instead, I tried everything I knew how to do and followed the recommendations from many on the internet.

Windows 10 simply would not install regardless of what I did.

My final resort was to format a SSD, removed all extraneous devices, installed Windows 7, did not add a single program or app, and then went to the Microsoft site and downloaded directly onto the very plain Windows 7 SSD.

The installation was made without a problem on August 14. It then took me two days to refit the three other SSD's internally and then cable up the other devices. The longest time was spent reinstalling the 3rd party software programs and devices.

Since then, the OS has worked without a failure. It will take time for me to determine if I like it better than Windows 7. Windows 7 was an easy and stable OS. I liked it very much.

Now, I look forward to seeing just what Windows 10 can do on my desktop.

I thank you again for your assistance during this frustrating time for me.,

Glad your up and running. You should now be able to do a fresh install. Can't blame you if you did not want to!
