To build or not to build? That is the question.

Hey ya'll,

Long time no see.

So I may build a new system for a friend of the GF. It is a
'for work" system with no intense graphics. Basic accounting software, cloud software, and the usual web surfing. So at first I was just going to get a pre built system like this one. ASUS Desktop PC BP1AD-I74770037B Intel Core i7 4770 Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit - Newegg.com

Then just get a 27" lcd and call it a day. But I was wondering if the i7 is overkill. And SSD is nice to have.

So questions...
AMD or Intel
Level of cpu performance
24" or more monitor. (this lady stares at it all day, so suggestions welcome)

things I am fairly certain of
8gig ram
on board audio and video
small footprint
SSD boot/progs
1 or 2tb data storage

And we are looking for bullet proof. No overclock or tweaks. And she wants to keep it under 1k..

Ideas?

Get a I5 Intel cpu and 16 gigs of ram (ram is cheap right now) and a 850 Evo ssd...on the monitor side get a IPS panel monitor...a lot better on the eyes and better overall picture and colors....

Re: To build or not to build? That is the question.

So what is the difference in all these code word processors? Haswell, skylake, etc, etc.

Ips? Will go look that up.

Thanks for the input buddy. Of course now I am thinking about going the hand me down route.. And me getting a new beast. My system is old for games but would kick *** in an office.

Re: To build or not to build? That is the question.

Skylake is the newest Intel cpu and chipsets...IPS is In plane switching...its the best panel you can get in lcd...best color, best viewing angles. You will need a os and if you have a W7 license that is legal you can get W10 for free....if you need more hard drive space for data you can get a 1 tb hardrive for $50.

I couldn't agree more with the above. Without being explicit, I would get an i5 for what she needs, I would then get an SSD, and an IPS monitor. What you choose of those should be based on cost. You do not need an 850 SSD if the 840 is on sale but I would get a 512GB so it doesn't become a bottleneck later. I didn't read all of FVB's suggestions but I would still get a discrete graphics card like a GTX 960/950. Power supply can be 400W.

I don't think they sell the 840 anymore, its hard just trying to find a 850 Evo now....I looked at Newegg and they where pretty much sold out of most sizes, Amazon had plenty...

Re: To build or not to build? That is the question.

Wow, SSD's get outdated quickly. I just recently invested in the 850 Pro so I thought the 840 would still be around and cheaper.
