Windows 10 Helpful Tidbits

Tidbit #1: Windows 10 wallpaper

Here is a new version of Windows 10's iconic 'hero' wallpaper that pops up in Windows 10 Cloud build 15046. I think it is badass. I am using the very last picture (3840x2160).

Tidbit #2: Quiet Hours

What is quiet hours in Windows 10? (Right-click Action Center in bottom right)

Quiet Hours is a new mode in Windows where you aren't disturbed by notifications or other forms of incoming communication. Quiet hours can be set manually or automatically based on a few parameters that you control.

BTW, the wallpaper above rocks.

Re: Windows 10

I know you can set the time you want to install updates but I didn't know about quiet hours, thanks for the info.

Tidbit #3: Disable Windows auto-driver updates

I have trouble installing my graphics card OEM driver and keeping it. Windows will eventually auto-update to the latest NV graphics driver and it does it with default settings so I get all the garbage I don't want like audio, 3D Vision, and GeForce Experience. I also have a unique monitor driver (unsigned) and run a custom display profile at 67Hz. All this goes back to default generic monitor after the driver install.

Anyway, with the current version of Win10 1607 (Anniversary Update) there is a way to disable driver updates (still testing if it works). Go to System/Advanced system settings/Hardware/Device Installation Settings

"Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices?" Select No.

It ticks me off when Windows installs a big driver behind my back like NV graphics driver and I see GeForce Experience icon in my system tray.

Tidbit #4: Disable graphics driver auto update with O&OSU10

Well my thinking got me thinking, do you remember OOSU10? There is a setting under Windows Update called "Automatic drivers updates through Windows Update disabled." I turned it green.

Amen, that website has been my go-to resource for wallpapers for over a decade now.

I might add the official Windows wallpaper repository is pretty good too!

Re: Windows 10

Tidbit #5: A+ Graphics driver uninstaller

Recently I had some issues with my display driver being updated automatically. In previous posts I found out how to disable automatic driver updates and even better was O&O Shut Up 10 which has an explicit option for the display driver. That fixed the auto updating Windows was doing to my 1070's original driver.

But I still have some issues. When I go to install my original 372.70WHQL drivers I would see a screen advert. to buy the 1080Ti. I wonder how a stand alone driver package dated Aug. 2016 would have this unless it is going online. This may be standard OP for NV drivers nowadays but I also did not see the NV display icon on they systray nor did I have the desktop right-click NVidia Control Panel showing and I would only see the PhysX driver showing in Programs and Features and not the display driver. Also I am sure many of you have experienced this before. If you uninstall your display driver completely through Programs and Features and reboot your machine, you see as soon as reboot that Windows has reinstalled the driver.

Well I fixed all that to. I found a good utility I recommend. It is Guru3D DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).

Downloading Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 17.0.6.0

I DL this and ran it (standalone) and selected the top option. This wipes everything clean (takes awhile) then auto reboots and disables Windows auto driver install. When I got into Windows I saw a desktop screen I had never seen before. This program removes all AMD/NVidia drivers including registry keys, folders and files, and driver store. Then I installed my drivers and all is wonderful. All aspects of the driver package are present and working. This super clean display driver install plus the two ways I posted previously to disable Windows auto driver updates and display driver updates, I am sure I am locked in now with a good driver install. Also, disabling the driver updates does not affect Windows updates, just hardware driver updates.

I really recommend running the utility above. After you install new drivers on top of old drivers over and over you might run into issues. Doing the 'Clean Install' within the driver package does not get rid of all the files and references. I will always use this proggy first if I install a new display driver.

Tidbit #6: Stop intermittent mouse cursor lockup

Here is another tidbit. I will use the word plagued. I was plagued by an intermittent freezing of my mouse in my favorite past time game Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. I have battled this bug for a while even hoping a video card change would fix it. Ran the game in all kinds of modes, even suspected the new Broadwell-E CPU Turbo Boost app/driver or that it might be my overclock settings, ASUS GPU Tweak II, etc. Turns out it does it on my desktop just moving around at times but you don't notice as much because the desktop is static. Anyway, after seeing it on the desktop as well as the game I Googled it and found this tidbit.

"Disable Hiding Pointer while Typing. Fix unexpected jumps and freezing issues with your mouse in Windows 10 by disabling a feature that automatically hides your pointer. ... You can do so from Hardware and Sound category in Control Panel, and then by changing Pointer Options from Mouse Properties dialog."

I went directly into my mouse settings and yes sirree, the box was check to hide the pointer while typing. Must be a default setting. Anyway it is now unchecked and I am looking forward to not having my mouse lock up intermittently. This appears to be a common problem which is why I am sharing it.

Yeah Skully I have had it for a long time and thought it was from a new video card or Broadwell CPU. I came close to selling my Broadwell and going back to the Haswell-E I had before but have decided to keep the 2yr newer CPU. I have since loaded my Turbo Boost driver back. I think it is fixed. My system is really running well. I have the video card driver running lean and mean. I am back to using ASUS GPU Tweak. I run stock Gaming mode and all I need is my fan profile to stick and it does. I can't get a high OC with this Broadwell E but it does good with all 6 cores hitting 4.1GHz + HT and they also all go down to 1200MHz during idle.

Tidbit #7: Registering Windows

Well I was cleaning up Windows some more. I deleted my old Microsoft Hotmail account I have had since the 90's. For about the past 10 years I have been using it for less trusted websites and ones I believe will send me junk mail.

Anyway, most of you login to MS Windows and have an account. You can associate your current Windows OS license with your online account with a digital certificate and never have to go through the phone registration process again. This work well when changing out parts such as the mobo. You can also register other devices and probably apps. Here are the directions below, it's easy.

How to associate your Windows 10 license with a Microsoft account | On MSFT
