Re: Ryzen 1800X Sets a New world record!

Good for AMD, I am glad they have been able to hang on for so long and keep producing a competing product. I would like to go to an 8 core Intel chip, been on 6 long enough. But, I would want to see it reach closer to 4GHz and be affordable, $600 tops.

Will wait and see. I am pretty cemented with Intel and my RVE10 mobo. It would be nice if AMD could knock down Intels prices but Intel rarely changes its prices. Going to an AMD CPU is not too risky, it is the whole AMD mobo/chipset that is the precarious part.

I am thinking both Intel and AMD might have to do what MS did with Windows and that is drastically lower prices to keep the desktop alive. Still have to stay above cost though.

They have new chipsets out and all the manufactures are coming out with lots of new MB!

Re: Ryzen 1800X Sets a New world record!

I would give the Vega a good look but it would take a lot more convincing to want to go AMD with the CPU and mobo.l A lot more.

BTW, I think Vega has a good chance to get ahead of NV because that new HB memory tech is coming into it's own but still you have to consider drivers.

Nvidia drivers haven't been very good lately, lots of hot fixes to fix the new ones...I have been on old drivers for a long time now I see no need to update right now?

Yes indeed. I am on the drivers posted on ASUS website.

NVDriver_Win10_64_VER372_70WHQL

There have been 10 new driver sets since that version but it works great. I always read the Release Notes and nothing pertains to my card or games. Most of it is new card compatibility, VR, SLI, or GameFirst which I don't run anymore. If your PC is running fine and your games are running fine I would leave the drivers alone because there is a much greater chance you will screw something up. The last big game I played was Borderlands 2 and it has not been mentioned for a long time in the game support.

Good to know that works. We're still sufferring through the recovery which is proceeding much more slowly than anyone anticipated. I believe that we have a ways to go yet, too.

This is fantastic news about Ryzen and if the benchmarks bear these early indications out then we're potentially looking at a new era of competition which has been sadly lacking for a few years now.
This plus RX Vega could make for some great times ahead.

Re: Ryzen 1800X Sets a New world record!

Intel's latest Kaby Lake CPU is probably one of the most mediocre advances in history. When the top mainstream K CPU comes out for only $299 there is nuthin' fancy. I am glad for AMD and us to see competition but I wonder if it is enough to kickstart the stagnant desktop business. Also, I am not sure what I would want to see in a new CPU besides lower prices, yesterdays CPU's are overkill for home desktop requirements, even on a gaming rig IMO.

Re: Ryzen 1800X Sets a New world record!

Yeah, lots of post on Ryzen over at Anandtech forums. It's a new platform and there are some bugs to workout in with Win10 and BIOSes. There is a new stepping coming out in a few months that should improve performance and goose the clocks a tad bit (I'm hoping they fix the IMC, which is limiting RAM speeds ATM).

It's really awesome to have AMD back in the game (and Vega is looking pretty good according to leaks). I'm was hoping (again) to upgrade my system towards the end of this year - maybe I'll be going AMD :-o Heck of lot less money than Skylake-X (unless Intel alters their prices a bit).

Speaking of HEDT - There is now confirmation that AMD will be offering a 16core/32thead processor on a new X399 platform this summer! Not allot of details yet, and clocks will be lower than Ryzen, but prices are expected to be around $1K for the CPU - awesome system for workstations and content creators!
