Re: ASUS -- ROG Maximus X Formula

Couple of notes on the Formula regarding memory. The HyperX that was not recognized in my RVE10 mobo are listed in the QVL list for the Formula. They have the 2x16GB sticks, same Predator's, same spec's, just 2x16GB instead of 2x8GB like I used. I am pretty sure I will buy that RAM again when the time comes.

Second, going from quad-channel to dual-channel is not a 50% loss in bandwidth as one would expect.

i7-5960X memory bandwidth = 68GB/s

i7-8700K memory bandwidth = 42.7GB/s

In my case 5960X vs. 8700K, the 8700K is only 41% less. Probably due to 2133MHz vs. 2666MHz bus.

Anyway I thought that was positive news for the Formula corner.

Re: ASUS -- ROG Maximus X Formula

As I posted in another thread I decided on Corsair Dominator 2666MHz memory.

Here is a pic I saw today that shows the internal VRM copper block by EK. I also found a nice sexy frontal shot of the board.

Re: ASUS -- ROG Maximus X Formula

Yeah that's the memory I posted about when this thread came out and it runs at 1.20 volts Great decision...one question how do you get the pictures to show on your threads when I put a picture in my threads it just shows a link to it?

Re: ASUS -- ROG Maximus X Formula

The Maximus X Formula does have a good water block on it.
But I'm done playing musical chairs with mobo's...

Well there were really two choices and I needed the one that will work in my current mobo. Not the fastest or lowest latency but still 2666MHz and should run cool and stable. I do not like to OC RAM. If I OC it will be just the CPU by changing the CPU multiplier.

Yeah, I am WC the GPU and CPU so I will take advantage of the VRM. It is made my EK and so will my CPU/GPU blocks be. I may or may not OC but all three blocks should be running close to the same temp. BTW, it only takes a small amount of cheap tubing and two $5 couplings to add the VRM to the loop.

Re: ASUS -- ROG Maximus X Formula

Well guys looks like I will be closing down several threads as I made a new plan tonight to stick with my RVE10 mobo. I could of really made something out of the Formula but I think I am making a bad decision giving up my current system at this early stage and for this mainstream setup. I will discuss some reasons why later.

Re: ASUS -- ROG Maximus X Formula

OK I knew this motherboard would be expensive but $449 is a bit much and here in Ca it would be $500 and you add a 8700K for $419 your at the price I paid for the 7820X and the Apex VI ($419 no tax) your choice but I'm glad I went the way I went! By the way this is the first place I've seen this board in stock!

Re: ASUS -- ROG Maximus X Formula

Yeah the line is getting thinner between HEDT and top end mainstream. The only thing that is separating them is mainstream has a GPU and HEDT has Xeon based CPU with quad-channel DDR.

I would not get Z370 and the 8700K. The Z390 is around the corner with a new 8-core. It may be on 10nm and the chipset will offer a lot more and should have good support for PCI SSD and Intel Optane memory. Even if you don't want 8-core there might be a revised 6-core.

Whatever you do in the future doesn't matter as much. If you had a system based off today's hardware it would be so fast you won't be able to notice any performance increases. My system has been that way since I had the Intel 750 and Samsung 950 SSD's and of course a modern video card.

Exactly Sandog, I'll be set for has long as I want....to be honest I really didn't need to do this upgrade, but it helps my brother in law and gives me something to do.
