Re: Asus ROG RAMPAGE VI APEX

Intel will be coming out with Cascade Lake-X later this year and it will bring along revised X299 mobo models. I would be 10X more likely to change my CPU than I would my mobo and I don't want to change my CPU even. Plus, I really really can't see anything to do better about the APEX. Nothing in terms of looks, heat sinks, slots, etc. I guess ASUS could improve the audio with an ESS DAC onboard but I don't use onboard audio. There will not be many substantial feature changes unless Intel changes the capabilities of the X299 chipset and that won't happen. I am pretty sure X299 stays the way it is.

Re: Asus ROG RAMPAGE VI APEX

Yeah, I don't use it. I am basically running stock on my i9-7900X and I am getting 3 cores at 4.5GHz. I love it. All I do is select XMP in BIOS and the Gaming Profile and I am done. Likewise for my VGA card, I select OC Mode and I am done. I don't use any monitoring or OCing software. Under harshest gaming I get both CPU/GPU around 50C max. My 3200/CL16 memory has been running as fine as my 3yr old 2400 Dominators were. I also don't have notifications popping up in Action Center any longer and I am still enjoying that plus my runs like a scalded cat lately.

Yeah Skully I am enjoying my PC a lot. Been doing some homework, still gaming in Wolf TNO, and watching YT videos. I love the way the water cooling is running. I have had many custom built water cooling rigs but I never felt this good about one before. With my case window I can see the flow indicator and how much water is in the system in a second. Also I am very picky about noise and have even gotten worse about it as I get older. Well this pump is very quiet, more so than the D5's I am use to using. Also quieter that AIO's from Corsair. I never hear the gurgling noise I always got from my Corsair coolers ever so often. It is the most enjoyable water loop I have owned.

The Intel 900P is a great drive. It is behaving very well and fast in everything including booting up. I have lots of drive space available.

Used/Available (GB's)
900P > 149/329
850 Pro > 307/716
960 Pro > 192/307

One thing I am looking forward to is the new ASUS Flare keyboard. I will be jumping on that one ASAP. The other thing I am looking at is Corsair fans. The Corsair 140mm Maglev fans are probably the best fans I have ever used if you factor in quietness and looks. Well Corsair has RGB Maglev fans now. I was thinking of ganging my 3 case fans together to one APEX RGB header and ganging my reservoir and CPU block to the second RGB header. You can control both RGB headers with AURA. I could make them white like they are now or else cherry red and breathing mode. With a white case any color looks good. I still have a white LED strip at the top of my case to use for illumination.

Re: Asus ROG RAMPAGE VI APEX

I figured you would like the Flair keyboard, I can't figure out if the body is plastic or Aluminium? I think its plastic or they would mention it...sort of a step backwards from our ducky's...I'll still order one just for the volume wheel, and I've got used to having rgb's on the Shine 5...

Yeah I forgot about that tidbit, I am sure it is plastic because it looks like a no-frills keyboard geared toward affordability. Not sure if it is metal or not but it looks like metal. I will post about it in your thread.

No frills for $179...that's more than I paid for the Shine 5...Oh well I'll see when it comes out. I still think my Ducky legend is the best keyboard I've ever had but I can't get it back from my wife....lol

Re: Asus ROG RAMPAGE VI APEX

Ahh I didn't know what the cost was. No keyboard is perfect but my Ducky Shine comes very close. You could argue that the volume controls are half there, hit FN + PgDn. I like the lettering on my Ducky and the Flare is different plus I don't know if I will like all the LED's (9) around the bottom of the keyboard. Still I will probably get this ASAP. If Ducky comes out with a knock out for the Shine 7 Year of the Dog I might get swayed. I am hoping Ducky replaces that clay brick with a volume roller knob. Anyway, if I like the Flare I won't even bother with the Ducky. I really like the ROG theme on the Flare. In fact, I think I will like the volume knob on the left side as well.

Speaking of volume, I read some reviews on my old AKG K712 Pro headphones and was surprised at the rave reviews it got even from musicians in the biz for 40yrs. Apparently I got a great set.

Re: Asus ROG RAMPAGE VI APEX

Hey I updated the post. It is not a new BIOS, it is new firmware for Intel MEI.

I do not have MEI installed so I am not installing this.

Re: Asus ROG RAMPAGE VI APEX

Has anyone updated the Intel Management Engine Interface firmware yet?

I heard about all the hacking going on at the Olympics and gave it a second look because I would hate for something to happen and my personal information got compromised. There are so many hackers out there whether they are doing it for a living, for some company, or some government agency.

So, Intel MEI is some sort of hardware/management software unit that lets a host see the computer as a PCI device and can interface to the management engine/software. What it is for is so the host can monitor, maintain, update, upgrade, and repair the PC as needed.

Well for a single home PC this is looks irrelevant which is probably why I don't use it. I believe I had a couple of instances when I installed it. Once was when it first came out and ASUS/Intel CPU was asking for it. I think it was on one of the ASUS WS boards like the Z87/97. The other instance was when I had my RVE and OC panel and I was setting up control. I do not need it for my current OC Panel which I use only for displaying info.

Even if the IMEI software is not installed the device is still present in DM/System Devices. I have not tried to disable/remove the device yet and there is probably a BIOS setting for it as well. I am not sure how it would affect my PC to update the firmware for the ME device since I don't use it but, if you update it there is no going back because I do not have the original firmware.

Just some info. I wanted to put out.
