Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Got my new processor installed. All is well.

It saw the new CPU in BIOS but all my Tweaker settings were still set to the 5930K six-core. I got into Windows and it was not stable at the old OC. I went back into BIOS and re-flashed it so I started with a fresh-reset BIOS. Now I am kicking. I am at 4.5GHz on all cores with HT and I still suck 168W on the desktop. I ran IXTU and got all 8 cores doing 4.5GHz in the benchmark and I think I hit 500W temporarily. All is good!

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Ran AIDA64 and passed. I saw it hit 534W on my wattmeter temporarily. Runs just as cool as my old processor on the desktop. I am going to burn it in for awhile here with Prime95 to seat the TIM.

Like I said a while ago when I was contemplating the 5960X 8-core. The 6-core is the same die with two cores cut. That is why I am not surprised that power is close together on the two. Also, I am getting some wicked low temps on this CPU already and this is with the 4.5GHz OC. I used the factory TIM from my new Corsair H115i cooler on the 5930K. When I took it off it looked just like the circle that was under the heat sink with a lot of bare metal showing on the CPU. I used Phobya CPU cleaner on the HS and applied a big blob of GC-Extreme in the center of the CPU.

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Well guys I ran Prime95 to burn in the TIM. I hit a package temp of 99C and sucked 564W after about 10min. I never took HT off though and decided that I would pull her down to around 4.3GHz on all cores. Well I went into BIOS and gave TPUII auto-clocking a whirl. TPUI is for HSF and and TPUII is for water coolers. Anyway TPUII set all my cores to 3.9GHz and left all the core and cache voltages on Auto. Before I booted into Windows I got this splash screen.

bgt (3).JPG

The reason it says 30% is because ASUS is measuring from the base clock of 3.0GHz on my 5960X. Anyway, I got into Windows and my desktop was very snappy. I think this is where I am staying for now. I rather OC to what I feel is snappy, and of course absolutely stable, and not worry about burning down the house hehe. I am not comfortable running at max clocks just to gain the best benchmarks.

One thing is for sure, I am keeping this CPU. I like it a lot. I have some more testing to do. I have to figure out what CPU temp monitor I will use. RealTemp does not show 8 cores.

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Thanks guys! I like it. It is not at power hungry or hot as I thought it was going to be.

I scored 1773pts in IXTU with my 5930K @ 4.5GHz and scored 2275pts with my new 5960X @ 4.5GHz. That is a big jump percentage wise.

Like I said, I am at 3.9GHz on all cores and liking it. Cache is set to Auto but maxes at 3GHz. Memory is always XMP DDR2400 CL12.

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Yea great score, mine is oc'd quite a goodly gob more then your cpu.
@ 4.9mhz anywho my highest IXTU has been 3011, just now it was
2816... I don't think their a chance I'll take this 7900X back. May
go back to water cooling on the mobo when EK comes out with a
full cover mobo water block. To tame the VRM BEAST... And change
over to ROG Extreme VI Apex, when ASUS brings it out...

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Thanks Skully, I would keep your new 10 core for sure. That thing is a monster with 44 PCI lanes and two AVX512 ports and I didn't even know it would OC so well. Still, I really like the system I got now and intend to keep it for a while.

On a backwards note, I have 8-cores + HT @ 3.9GHz for now and it doesn't even get very hot. Under AIDA64 I think it reached 58C max and needless to say, it is solid as a rock. All dealings in Windows feels snappy and I have not felt any little glitches or bumps doing anything. I believe it is literally solid as a boulder. Last night after playing DooM my room felt slightly cooler than before with the old CPU. That tickles me pink. I am really done inside my case after I get the VGA stand. All my BIOS settings and fan controls are set as well. I am just going to wait for Ducky YoTD coming in 2018.

Thanks, I will DL the new IXTU but I wish AIDA64 would update their CPU comparisons to show some Skylake benchies.

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Well I have my new OC'd BIOS profile saved and it is solid as I stated above.

There are a few things to do with a new CPU IMO just as a FMI (For My Info.)

Some are to make sure Windows is activated properly still, the TIM is burned in good, and a bevy of benchmarks are run such as TimeSpy, Firestrike, and Valley. One of the things to do is to load ASUS Dual Intelligent Processors and let it OC to the max. I got up to 4.7GHz on 3 cores and 4.6GHz on the rest with my 5930K and I want to know how the 5960X does. I will be installing/running DIP soon. I might try with and without HT enabled in BIOS.

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Well I got up to 4.692GHz with HT enabled and 4.747GHz without HT.

Capture.JPG

That leads me to feel comfortable going with 4.5GHz + HT or 4.6GHz without.

I am back to using 3.9GHz + HT. I really like 3.9GHZ, it is what ASUS BIOS TPUII OC'd to. It feels very snappy in Windows and my package high temp is 74C after AIDA64 benchmarking. Watts is around 400 max.

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

Well I stuck this thread. I plan on being a 5960Xpert. Sometimes the stars and planets align in the galaxy to produce something unique and Intel had one of those occurrences when it came out with it's first desktop 8-core using new Haswell architecture on a refined 22nm die process.

What makes this CPU so good is it's outstanding OC potential. It makes me wonder why Intel set the base on this CPU at 3.0GHz. I believe Intel was just keeping the frequency inline with current models at the time plus the fact that probably didn't want to list is faster than current 6-cores.

Haswell architecture was one of the best OCing archs Intel has had if you judge by how high the clock frequency run stable above factory. The i7-5960X goes as high a 57% in reviews. There have been a handful of CPU's that can reach 50% OC. Remember the 300A or Q6600? One of the best properties of the 5960X are the temps which are tied hand-in-hand with OCing. 1GHz OC can be achieved with temps still in the 70's. Temperatures also seem very stable with this CPU.

There is a lot of information on the i7-5960X. The top 10 reviews sites all have singular reviews on this amazing CPU. One review site tested 5 samples. Several reviews are a dozen pages long and most are filled with a lot of details on OCing this chip. Also, I read something you usually don't read or expect in a CPU. One review pointed out that usually the lower tier CPU's will do better in OCing but the 5960X actually was better than the tested 5930K 6-core CPU was.

If you go here, you will see the specs which if you disregard core frequency, the 5960X looks better. The only thing it is missing is AVX512 which has gone nowhere from what I have heard. As far as the core clock, the 5960X can clock equal or higher and do it with better temps. According to reviews the memory with X99/5960X will go as high as 3400MHz.

Anyway, this Extreme Edition CPU can be had for around $600 new and lower if you get used. XJ it is something you should look at. Remember I said how much I liked the i7-970 Gulftown? Well this chip has a lot of cache and runs just as smooth but is a better OCer and is an 8-core.

Re: Intel Core i7-5960X Processor Extreme Edition

I am on 4.5GHz ATT as shown over at this thread.

ABXZone Computer Forums - View Single Post - Overclock Your CPU.

I am not tweaked yet and won't be until after I get my WC loop going. I am looking forward to when others get the new Skylake-X i7-7820K so I can compare CPU and memory benchmark scores, temps, voltages, etc. with my i7-5960X.
