OpenVPN Connections

I've tried multiple VPN services thus far: NordVPN, HostWinds and Private Internet Access. I've been through all of their support departments and none have helped resolve this problem.

They all want me to use the Ookla PoS speed test that is inaccurate AF every time. A flash based Internet speed test app is as reliable as a shotgun shell that has soaked in water for a month. You'll understand why I mention this if you keep reading.

While I am connected to the closest server available from either of the aforementioned services, Ookla states that my Internet connection speed is 50Mb/s by 50Mb/s. Testmy.net reveals the truth. 5Mb/s by 5Mb/s. Any and all video streaming is so pixelated and completely unwatchable.

Does anyone here have much experience with resolving OpenVPN problems?

Re: OpenVPN Connections

If you find a good and cheap VPN let us know, I tested my speeds and the testnet is slower than Megapath on download speeds by 2/3rds the Testnet server is in Texas and Megapath is in Arizona. One reason I've always heard the at a VPN will slow down your speeds, but not that much?

NordVPN would be my recommendation. Done correctly you can get 3 years for $99. They're support is fantastic. Just by entering their chat on the website, they help with what they can. No 24 hour canned email responses.

Testmy.net is an actual test. It will upload and/or retrieve a unique file directly to your system and then display the actual results.

A flash testing app may access cached files that give the appearance of a faster connection speed. Inaccurate!

Adding that my real VPN problem is a naming resolution problem. It may take a site like CNN or Verge or any other site up to and beyond 10 seconds to start loading. It stalls during host resolution. If I can fix that, my VPN service may actually function better.

Re: OpenVPN Connections

What are you using the VPN for? I use openvpn between multiple locations and never had a issue.

You could try using a different DNS and see if it improves. Of course that can reveal private data about your browsing,
Have you tried a traceroute to see whats going on?
Also some network providers throttle or restrict speed on certain ports or protocols, so you could try changing these around.

Theoretically the speed hit due to encryption shouldnt be that large but in practice I've never found a vpn service that gives close to my full speeds, they're always much lower.

Re: OpenVPN Connections

I use 1.1.1.1 DNS now but for the VPN it didn't matter which DNS addys I implemented. The slow resolution was the same and performance was putrid.

Re: OpenVPN Connections

My suggestion (above) for a VPN service was incorrect. NordVPN is a cheap service with decent support, while Hostwinds has the best customer support. Hostwinds is more expensive though.

I'm going to give Hostwinds another shot at trying to resolve this problem.

Re: OpenVPN Connections

I am connected to Hostwinds VPN service and now I'm getting the proper test results. A steady 40Mb/s d/l and 39Mb/s u/l.

I wonder if installing the OpenVPN open source client before the branded client actually solved the problem. I will try again with a different VPN service after a month.
