Re: Z370 compaired to X299 Builds!

Thanks Zap. That was good info.
Bottom line: In the real world, 1 M.2 on the PCH is not worse than 1 on the CPU. However, 2 on the PCH could saturate the interface.

Here are the key points:
"What the synthetic benchmarks do tend to suggest is that connecting the SSD via one of the main PCIe3 x16 sockets will give slightly better performance in most cases over the native Z170 hyper M.2 socket, but the differences in performance are very marginal, and would almost certainly go unnoticed in the real world."
"According to PC Mark 8 storage suite, connecting via the native Z170 hyper M.2 socket provides a marginally faster connection when compared to connecting the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD to the main PCI3 x16 sockets. However, just like in the synthetic benchmarks, the difference in performance is so slight between the two connection methods to be unnoticeable in the real world."
“Native Z170 hyper M.2 is just as fast as the main PCIe3 x16 sockets driven directly from the CPU, and I have no problem recommending this connection method for anyone considering a high performance NVMe hyper M.2 SSD”.

Re: Z370 compaired to X299 Builds!

Yeah it would have been nice to see the difference but like what you said from what the guy was saying in real world you wouldn't notice a difference...but this site is about benchmarks...lol. To be honest and I've said this before, not much difference from my 950 Pro to my 840Evo....in real life stuff except for moving large files and opening your picture folder with thousands of pictures!

Re: Z370 compaired to X299 Builds!

Oh yeah. FV, the context of my point was SATA SSD vs NVM. Point being, unless your loading a gazillion bit file, the difference in performance is moot. Not worth the extra cost. Just saying!

Re: Z370 compaired to X299 Builds!

Actually, a 2TB Fusion Drive is the preferred option on an iMac. I want to see the 370WS first before deciding on Apple.

My parts picker total was about $2400.00 for the upgrade. So I may do it in stages if I stick with Windows. The SSD portion of the upgrade has now dropped pretty low on the list.

I've been saying that when I got my 950Pro but I have 1000's of pictures in my picture folder and opening that folder its instant on the 950 on my 840 evo I can sit back and watch the thumbnails open line by line. and really you can get a 960 Evo for $219 a 850 evo is $150 these are 512 gigs, not that much more...and the video she was using a 750 intel, she should have been using a 960 pro which kicks that intel's butt....

I am sure it appears faster. I am just saying that I need a 1TB drive and NVM is not worth the price difference.
