Did he enjoy Fallout 4?

Re: Fo4

I'm making slow progress due to a bunch of other priorities in the way unfortunately.

How crucial is crafting in this game? Do i have to use it? I find it boring and would rather skip it if possible. I much prefer the trader model with weapon upgrade trees.

As far as these types of features go, I think sleep added a lot to the rpg because it forced the player to experience the world at different times, adding more variety to the atmosphere and tactics.
Building up the funds by trade and exploration to buy that great weapon or mod you've had your eye on for a while is fun too. The need to eat and drink also added some realism and extra threat meaning you have limits set on how god like you can become. Magic ability trees only make sense in the context of the story, but can be very effective and entertaining.

But crafting just never seems to grab me. It feels too much like work and having to collect worthless junk to feed the habit is an annoying distraction.

Collect all the junk you can carry during each outing!

It's a more convenient way to get them.

Especially the rare items. One day you will need them. Collect and regularly empty your inventory of the junk items as often as possible into your favorite junk storage location. Mine is Sanctuary since Sanctuary already has all crafting stations there.

Wood and steel is all over the place. So occasionally do some scrapping. But ... screws as an example are not. Find them. Don't wait until you need them or you will be spending time trying to find all the stuff in places where you have already been. Or spend caps on them. ... and that's after you find the trader who sells that item.

Needed and nice to have already on hand when needed:
Spoiler:
screws, oil, springs, gears, crystal, concrete, fiberglass, adhesive, and a few other things I just can't think of right now

To me it is very nice to already have the materials needed, or to do a quick trip to Sanctuary to get them if your crafting need is location specific.

Food crafting I got into late. Too late. Food crafting is a great thing. Better than chems. After all, you are definitely going to kill the critters so you might as well take the meat and cook it. And ... I highly recommend the Ballistic Weave mod, an armor upgrade. Makes you almost invulnerable without power armor.

... now building up energy weapon resistance perk (Perception Level 7 "Refractor").

Regarding the robot hack perk: It's nice to be able to sneak up behind robots and just turn them off now. No drawn out battles with them.

The Institute is destroyed and I am on friendly terms with all three factions, the Brotherhood, Railroad, and Minutemen. The destruction of the Institute gave massive XP for the quest.

The commonwealth people are saying interesting comments as I travel around. And I am getting a few new Quests that apparently were not available until after the Institute went down.

So I will wonder around for a bit more in the commonwealth and then wait for the DLC.

Oh ... and that last Fallout 4 patch from a few days ago ... it did eliminate the constant 95% headshot perk. mmmmmmm .... I liked it while it lasted. Now I guess we will use twice as much ammo and get killed twice as often.

Well ... the "latest" issue of Publick Occurrences just hit the news stands in Diamond City and its lead article describes the downfall of the Institute. So I guess I am now "officially" in the period between Fallout 4's main game and the yet to be released DLC.

The new DLC will be available March.

Do you have your Season Pass? There will be a price increase soon for the Season Pass.

Finished Far Harbor.

Actually ... almost finished the Far Harbor DLC. The Far Harbor Main Quest is finished and I explored the Far Harbor alternative faction endings. Now I have one more side quest to do at Cliff's Edge Hotel. It's an independent two part quest arc. Then I'll be completely done with Far Harbor.

Far Harbor is a really good immersive add-on. It's a lengthy game all by it's self. Definitely worth the price of the Season Pass.

... and more DLC to come.
