ASUS Xonar U7 MkII External Sound Card

Just seen this and I might get one, the main reason is I could leave my headphones plug in and switch between them and my speakers, getting tired of switching between the two twice a day....

Hey FVB, my dilemma is I have this wonderful drive bay audio device (SurpremeFX) which is basically a STRIX RAID Deluxe and I don't use it. Such a shame. I have a nice short cable to plug into it with my HP's to. The reason is, I have a beautiful switching setup going. I leave my HP's plugged into the rear of my Essence audio card and I swith between my speakers and headphones with the keyboard.

I can setup several profiles with all the options available that are available in the audio control panel. I can set initial volume levels, sound effects, Dolby, etc. I have one for speakers that is default everytime I boot into Windows with 50% audio volume. I have two profiles for my headphones both open with 25% audio volume. One HP is for music, the other HP profile is for gaming and has Dolby Headphones enabled.

BTW, if anyone is listening we cannot upload pictures still.

Re: ASUS Xonar U7 MkII External Sound Card

BTW, I got caught up in bragging on my audio setup and forgot to mention if you are in the market for a new ASUS external card I would check see what is on the horizon with ASUS because they are putting the ESS DAC on current mobo's and internal sound cards and it will probably only be time before ASUS has an external audio device with them in it.

Re: ASUS Xonar U7 MkII External Sound Card

How do you have to switch between speakers and headphone now?

I have to plug in the headphones each time I want to use them, I use the Corsair remote volume box right below my monitor!

Re: ASUS Xonar U7 MkII External Sound Card

Yeah, I am amazed at how lazy I am in regards to headphone switching. I don't use the headphones much and still do not want to plug them in everytime I want to use them. My jack is in the audio card in back of the PC. That is why I like my setup so much. The RVE10 SupremeFX-HiFi audio box sounds better slightly but my Essence STX II sounds good enough AND provides the keyboard switching ability. I do not have to do any connecting or hit any switches on top of my desk. I also don't have a hockey puck on top of my desk with cables hanging out.

Another thing is I don't like using Windows audio control software or opening any audio software everytime I want to listen to something. I like to start up a game or listen to MP3's etc. without ever using the volume control in the system tray. The switching and volume control is all done through shortcut keys on my keyboard. I never see the volume bar/slider and have to grab it to move it up/down/mute. I can adjust volume while in a game or full-screen movie or switch back and forth between speakers and headphones. When I switch from speakers to headphones or vice-versa or boot the machine, the Windows volume always starts at 50% for speakers and 25% for HP's. For speakers I use my excellent Audioengine amplifier volume control which is a large vertical knob right in front of me.

My last upgrade was buying a cheap wall hanger for my headphones so they have a nice place to be stored and are in easy reach plus I can see them in plane site and they add a nice look to my desk.

I'm going to get this, should be a upgrade from the one I'm using now, yeah my media keys are the only thing I use for volume control...love them!

Re: ASUS Xonar U7 MkII External Sound Card

It looks great FVB, anything from ASUS is going to be really good PC audio. Their Zonar and Essence lines are the best and now STRIX audio is to audio cards what STRIX video is to video cards. I wish I had that ESS DAC on my Essence card. IMO, ASUS is a lot higher quality components and audio circuits than Creative Labs. Creative was king from adapting well with games and generating good effects. Nowadays I believe the audio tracks in games already have the surround sound built in and they do not use proprietary third party enhancements like EAX. Hope you enjoy it.

Re: ASUS Xonar U7 MkII External Sound Card

At one time or another the way I handled Jack switching was a Y cable. I simply reached over on my desk, turned-off the speaker amp and walla - only earphone audio. It worked!

Now I use cans most of the time, and a ghetto blaster for everything else.

Anyway - it looks good FV, enjoy!

Re: ASUS Xonar U7 MkII External Sound Card

Very interesting game. I like it.

In FarCry4 I had to every now and then revert to default key mapping to complete an intricate move. Then revert back to my customized keys. All this because of the stupid consoles. That's why I am not big into gaming anymore. I replay the favorites: Doom, FC4, FO4, and FSX.
