After the Laughter subsides where is the outrage?

I wrote this back in October of 2011, but never posted it... my feelings pretty much remain the same today.

The unveiling of AMD's Bulldozer left me with a feeling somewhat akin to the one I felt when Geraldo Rivera opened Al Capone's vault. It shouldn't have.

Geraldo can be forgiven, after all he is in show business and he really didn't know what was inside.

The same can not be said of AMD's Management. They had Bulldozer under development for years, and they knew what it could do and what it could Not.

All along AMD was promising that Bulldozer was just around the corner, and the community would be awed by its performance. But when Bulldozer was released, their "Octo" acted like a quad, and their quad performed no better than a dual core chip.

It seems the situation far exceeeded what I would quantify as acceptable marketing hype.

Integrity matters, and I feel AMD mislead their customers as well as stock holders.

As for multithreaded performance, my old "energy efficient" phenom II at 2.6 GHZ beat the New 3.6GHz chip even though the new chip had the advantage of a better graphics board. Note also that the new chip used 30 watts more to lose this race.

Cinebench 11.5:
AMD FX-4100 (95Watt) at stock 3.6Ghz with a GTX460 scored a 2.98
AMD Phenom ii X4 910e (65Watt) at stock 2.6Ghz with a 9800GTX+ scored a 3.05

AMD shouldn't have to apologize for their processor. I am sure they made their best attempt in a very complex industry and came up short.

But I believe they do owe the market an apology for letting overblown expectations linger for years.

If they don't change their business practices they will not only lose trust, but they will also lose the enterprise business segment. Professionals must plan out years ahead, and rely on their suppliers to be able to deliver what they promise. Without timely disclosure AMD, will have to go back to dealing with kids and vie for their gaming dollars. If not they can forget about the enterprise segment, for this is the realm of professionals, and they only deal with their own kind.

Great post and a very valid question. I agree that the mismanagement of the unwarranted high expectations was more of a failure than the product.

I think reputational impact is often underestimated when some of the executives are developing their strategies. The fallout just lingers for a long time.
