Re: Windows 10 on old pc not working

I gave it 30 minutes on each try. After awhile the USB ports stop responding and never come back on.

First time I used the latest Version of Rufus on a 3.0 and 2.0 usb flash drive. Both formatted NTFS. Then I used the Microsoft Media creation tool and that didn't work either. Also burnt the iso to dvd and that didn't work. I tried the disc and the usb drives in another computer and they worked perfect.

Ok, gotcha. I assume you also specified MBR partition scheme in Rufus? (Not GPT).

Well its a little weird. Somethings hanging it up. You could try fat32 just in case, but NTFS should be good. Hmm. Try reseting BIOS to defaults.
Is there a CMOS battery? Is it good? [edit - in case a bad battery is interfering with the BIOS somehow, but I just read that you installed Win 7 without any issues, so this probably wont help]

I think its possible to load up SATA drivers during setup in the installation via F6, but you're not getting that far, right?

Re: Windows 10 on old pc not working

It's a intel P35 chipset so I'm pretty sure windows 10 has the drivers. I've installed windows 10 on older computers without a issue. I've reset the bios and even updated them. Still a no go. I have one more thing to try and then I give up on it.

Re: Windows 10 on old pc not working

I left the cmos battery out all night and that didn't help. I took the video card out and put in one that was newer. Sure enough it booted into windows 10 install. So long as I have a newer video card in the computer windows 10 installs just fine. For the hell of it I put the old card back in and it failed to boot into the install screen.

Re: Windows 10 on old pc not working

I thought you were having issues booting the Win10 install off the USB flash drive and DVD... but your issue was that the Win10 install starts ok but then hangs with the older video card?

Some older video cards were not compatible with Windows 10. I expect Win10 to tell you that during the install. Possibly it just hangs, I've never tried it.

You should be able to check compatibility on M$ site somewhere.

It would boot off the USB and DVD but stop on the first screen. Black background with the Blue windows logo in the middle. Soon as I removed the video card and put in a newer one I was able to get past the first screen and continue to the next step.

Definitely sounds like an incompatible video card.
MS may publish a list somewhere, or the card manufacturer can probably confirm it for you.

Re: Windows 10 on old pc not working

I'm just going to leave Windows 7 Home Premium on it. It runs good and should last a few more years.
