The Windows 10 April 2018 Update Debuts On April 30

Microsoft announced that the Windows 10 April 2018 Update will debut on April 30. (Apparently the company likes to cut things a little close.) The latest major update to Windows 10 will bring with it new features such as Timeline, Focus Assist, and other miscellaneous improvements.

The Windows 10 April 2018 Update is part of Microsoft's plan to release major updates twice a year--once in the spring and once in the fall--to support Windows 10's positioning as an ever-evolving service instead of a one-off operating system. Rather than radically changing Windows 10's feature set or user interface, Microsoft hopes incremental upgrades will be enough to keep you happy until the next release comes around.

Re: The Windows 10 April 2018 Update Debuts On April 30

I've been running the Spring update for a week now and haven't had any issues. Seems little faster and more added tweaks and features.

Only thing I noticed right off the bat was the graphics was tweaked to look better and menu's changed a little. Edge browser seemed little faster.

Windows 10 RS4 April update launches today

Looking forward to the timeline

The April Update or the Windows Version 1803 is launching today, 30 April, ahead of May Day. It was supposed to launch earlier but had a rather severe bug which delayed things a bit. To make it the April update, they had to launch it today and they managed it. This is the one codenamed Red Stone 4.

The update was confirmed by Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Windows and Devices Group Yusuf Mehdi, on the Windows 10 official blog site.

Not everyone will get an update at once. Just as was the case with the 1709 Fall update, Microsoft is releasing the update in waves. You can speed things up using the Windows update website, but for us it is still showing that the Fall update is available and not the April 2018 one.

You can actually use the new Windows 10 ISO file and install it.

Re: The Windows 10 April 2018 Update Debuts On April 30

One of my laptops which has W10 Home automatically performed the update last night. There was one major problem, and a couple of trivial ones. The trivial ones also occurred during the Fall Creators Update, and just required minor tweaks of settings to resolve.

The major issue:

I had been using Homegroup for file sharing among the various computers in my house, most of which have W10 Pro. That function has been deleted in this update, as most here are probably aware. MANY people have reported on the net that problems arose with network file sharing during one of the major updates last year, if Homegroup was not being used. I had not previously looked into that since I was using Homegroup.

But after several hours of researching these posts, and trying countless things that were suggested, nothing completely resolved the problem. In one case I was able to see a shared folder on the W10 Home laptop from a W10 Pro desktop, but I couldn't see shared folders in the other direction.

Eventually I found a solution on my own:

Early on in the process I had of course gone through all of the advanced sharing settings in Windows, making sure that password protected sharing was disabled and other settings were set in a suitable manner. Early on I had also gone through all of the sharing-related settings under the properties of the folders I wanted to share, including the advanced ones, as well as under the "give access to" choices for those folders (in which I had given access to "everyone").

What finally worked was to open Windows Explorer to "this PC" and then use the "add a network location" function at the top of that screen. HOWEVER, although in some cases the suggested format worked, namely:

\\computer name\shared folder name

... in some cases the W10 Home computer couldn't find that location. In those cases I finally found that what worked was

\\computer name\users\user name\documents\folder name

The first format worked in viewing a shared folder on a non-updated W10 Pro desktop from the updated W10 Home laptop, but for no apparent reason did not work in viewing a shared folder on a different but very similar non-updated W10 Pro desktop from the same updated W10 Home laptop. In the latter case the second format was required.

The first format did work from both desktops in viewing a shared folder on the updated W10 Home laptop.

Whew!

(BTW, the word "updated" in all of the foregoing of course just refers to the Spring Creators Update; all of my computers are of course fully up to date with respect to previously issued patches).

The minor issues:

-- The update turned on fast startup, which can cause problems with the drive imaging program I use (Terabyte Unlimited's Image for Windows).

-- Default autoplay choices had to be reset.

I'm not sure yet how useful the new Timeline feature will prove to be for me and my wife. One minor feature that was added which I like is the ability to stop Windows from hiding scroll bars when they are not pointed to. That choice can be found under Start/Settings/Ease of Access/Display.

Best regards,
-- Al

Thanks for the heads up, I haven't done my rig yet, waiting for a week or two and see if there is any downsides.

Very interesting Al, thank you for the valuable info on that issue.
I haven't had a chance to run the update but will try it over the weekend. I've heard generally good things, mostly bug fixes this time rather than lots of useless new features.
