Problem with Windows Backup

Trying to backup on my wife's computer (my old D875PBZ), and it starts OK, telling me it's reading the shadow copy. I leave it alone and come back to find the backup failed with following message:

"Backup not successful. Error is: Windows backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy of one of the volumes being backed up."

I'm backing up to external drive I:\, backing C:System, D:Programs, Eata, Gata. F: is the page file, H: is the DVD.

I have the services set the same as in my computer (P7P55D 64bit).

Have you looked here: Windows backup or restore errors 0x80070001, 0x81000037, or 0x80070003

Re: Problem with Windows Backup

Thanks for the help. I'm having a little trouble interpreting the DOS talk, and my book doesn't list /al as an attribute. Working on it...

Re: Problem with Windows Backup

Try to isolate which of the drives is the culprit by backing up one drive at a time, if at all possible.

I would start with G: and work back to C:

Of course, Windows Backup isn't exactly a well-loved solution. Some free ones can be found here: Compression and Backup Downloads - FileHippo.com

I have used DriveImage XML and SyncBack with good results. Hope this helps.

Re: Problem with Windows Backup

I installed DriveImage XML, and it is running now.

I looked around with Disk Management because I couldn't find the junctions I got with the DIR command. They were all in C:/Users/Jane/AppData/, and when I looked, it turned out that there is NO AppData.

Disk Manager revealed a mysterious 100MB "System Reserved" sector leading Disk 0, followed by C: System 49GB, D: Programs 49GB, and E: Data 368GB. The option to open the System Reserved sector is greyed out.

Disk 1 has a leading 8 MB unallocated sector followed by F: Page File 2.3GB and G: Data 14.5GB.

I'm scared to death of losing any of the wife's data, so I hesitate to do any meddling with partitioning.

Re: Problem with Windows Backup

The partitioning you describe sounds like normal Win 7 partitioning. The 100MB is always created by the OS at install and the 8MB unallocated space is likely offset for sector alignment.
Nothing unusual.
