Recovering Files From a Corrupt Hard Drive

Hi

I've not been on this forum in ages - I suppose the reason is if you don't have a problem then you have no need to post! I have always received excellent help and support from this forum when I have had problems and I have another now.

I am trying to recover files from a Hard Drive which has a completely nuked file allocation table.

The drive resulted in a BSOD "Unmountable Boot Volume" when in the host computer and chkdsk, whilst it started, resulted in an error "Unrecoverable Errors" after 25% completed and refused to go any further.

Slipping the drive into a faster and better PC (Vista) results in an error "Master File Table Error" and several softwares refuse to see it or scan it so I can then recover any files.

In Windows The drive is seen but it says it needs formatting and Disk Admin doesn't give me any corrective options either.

Can anyone help or are the files lost - again I have used several recovery softwares so I suppose my question is, if I format the drive will the softwares then be able to recover the files - I suspect not and the only option is to send the drive to a specialist.

But you guys may know better?

Cheers in anticipation

Paul

Re: Recovering Files From a Corrupt Hard Drive

Don't format or do anything else to the drive...
Yes! Recovery software works!
I can't recommend the programs I used a while back as they are buried on another machine. There are quite a few out there and a couple good ones fairly inexpensive.
Get the TRIAL version first to see what you can see. Trial versions don't offer all the features or recover all the files but will let you know what the program can do.

If you can get to this thread
[closed] Data Recovery bad drive - Kicken Hardware Computer Help Forum
it details experimentation with several softwares.
I was able to recover 99% of the files on a blown drive.

Like CYCLOPS said, don't format! just connect that hdd as a secondary on another pc and run a recovery software. Try Recuva, it's free, get it here Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

Re: Recovering Files From a Corrupt Hard Drive

I have used GetDataBack Data Recovery Software - Hard Drive Recovery - RAID Recovery - Runtime Software several times with excellent results.
A friend paid for it to recover his files from his laptop, worked like a charm.

Re: Recovering Files From a Corrupt Hard Drive

It's common for a cold or hot (not too!) soak to make a drive work long enough to get stuff off.

What I don't know is whether that procedure reduces the chance that other approaches will work.

Re: Recovering Files From a Corrupt Hard Drive

Cheers everyone - I work shifts hence am only able to reply in the mornings this week.

I have used ARAX Disc Doctor, Activ Undelete, Recuva and another one which I forget. They simply do not see anything - yes they try to scan but get nowhere popping up several messages along the lines that the drive is "nuked".

The drive is seen at a low level, even in windows but the file allocation is so shot that nothing I try works. I've tried mounting the drive in an external drive bay, connecting via external sata, usb and firewire - nothing helps. Connecting internally gives better drive analysis but again the file table is so shot that they report nothing at all.

Remember that the files have not been deleted - I believe the file table needs repairing before I can get the files off the drive.

Any further suggestions before I go to a specialist?

Re: Recovering Files From a Corrupt Hard Drive

If you have formatted your hard drive then you can recover data from formatted hard drive. Remo Recover (Windows) - Pro Edition software can recover data from hard drive. Formatted hard drive recovery can be done very easily using this software. You can download and install demo version of the software in your system to evaluate chances of recovery.
