Samsung 960 EVO.

Getting the 500GB version soon. The 960 EVO is really close to it's premium cousin this time. It uses the same Polaris controller as the 960 Pro and aside from getting 3200/1800MB/s R/W vs. 3500/2100MB/s for the Pro and having 500GB vs. 512GB, it is the same drive but $100 cheaper. Another way to put it, it has over 92% of the performance of the Pro and 98% of the capacity and the Pro is the fastest gumstick in the west. I won't notice the speed difference or the size difference so why pay more? This will make an excellent game drive.

Re: Samsung 960 EVO.

Is anyone using the Samsung NVMe driver or should I just let Windows take care of it? I use the Intel provided NVMe driver for my Optane because it is so new but wonder if I should install the Samsung one.

I installed the Samsung nvme driver on my 950 Pro and Skully did too....and we both have the latest Intel optane driver installed too. I asked Skully when I got my Optane and he said he installed both, so I did too!

Re: Samsung 960 EVO.

I am running this as my main drive on my 7820 system and also on an AMD Ryzen media system. Have the Samsung NVMe driver installed on both. Been a solid drive on both systems.

I would go with the manufacturers supplied driver.
Windows would supply a generalized driver, but the manufacturer wrote code specifically for that device. It may enable special features only available on that model. Also the manufacturer tested with his driver which would possibly set timings and voltages.

Re: Samsung 960 EVO.

Got my drive today. All systems are a go. It would not go in the socket without hitting the big I/O heatsink with the EK heatsink added. I went ahead and put it in the PCH_DIMM.2 socket. A few less read points doesn't matter.

I have fully formatted the drive, installed the Samsung NVMe driver, labeled the volume 'Steam', and gave it disk drive letter 'G' for gaming lol.

Re: Samsung 960 EVO.

I would put the drive on the other side of the dimm slot for air flow to the drive and it would let you see that beautiful heat-sink...is that possible? Nice benchmarks by the way....great drive setup Sandog!

Re: Samsung 960 EVO.

You can put it on the other side but it is much lower. Take a look at the DIMM.2 adapter card a few pages back. I like it where it is. I did not take a good picture of it.

Here are the temps.

Re: Samsung 960 EVO.

OK I didn't see the other picture I will check it out but from the angle you posted you can't see the heat-sink at all except the top? Either way nice upgrade! Wouldn't you get more air flow from the front fans if it was on the other side? This is just a suggestion and a question...either way its great.

Re: Samsung 960 EVO.

I think I am going to try to flip it around and put it on the CPU_DIMM.2. I am curious to know if it works and if I get a better benchmark. I've already got 83GB of games on it and climbing lol.
