Re: Intel Optane SSD 900P 480GB NVME 3D XPoint!

As soon as I get up and running next week I am getting this drive. It would really look good in my case. This drive is the coolest looking piece of hardware Intel has put out IMO. It is also the only drive I would consider replacing my 750 with.

Well that didn't take long Sandog .....what about this just a few days ago...lol...New tech is hard to resist!

"I would be a little hesitant to jump on this. First it is brand new tech. Second it is 2-3X the cost per GB that I paid for the already expensive 750. And last, I would want to hear from one of you guys being and early adopter and how fast it feels to you. I really can not see where there could be much felt difference or if it would even save time compared to the 750/960 drives now so I would like to hear some user experience. I can already transfer any large file I have in seconds. For my personal use the only area I can see as lacking is maybe my web speed."

Re: Intel Optane SSD 900P 480GB NVME 3D XPoint!

Yeah I read the review last night at Anandtech. Even though 3D Xpoint is new the way the memory is interfaced to the PC is not so the new memory tech is transparent and the is no acceptance curve. Another point was unlike Intel's other firsts like the M24 (first SSD) and first PCI x4 SSD, this new and leading edge memory will not be reproducible by Samsung and others so the 900P will be top dog for a long time. Also, the new memory does not use page and block writing like flash memory and therefore does not need garbage collection which takes away space on your SSD. You should see close to the whole 480GB capacity. There is no requirement for DRAM cache like on flash memory SSD's which is like taking the middle man out. There is also a lot less if no wear-leveling required. Also, without DRAM cache the drive does not require the power loss protection like on flash SSD's like Sammy and the 750 and "to avoid the consequences of Microsoft's stupid NVMe driver write cache policy defaults." Power has decreased almost 50% over the 750 but still high compared to the 960 but it is still nothing to worry about on a full-sized card (14W). It also has handle 10 drive writes per day which is a huge increase over the 750.

The only negative is 480GB for 600$ but that is still inside my budget (paid equal for 750) and I have never went 200GB on my OS drive. Like I said I love the looks of this drive and it has got to go inside my case to replace the silver/green 750. Funny thing is when news first broke of the Intel 750, it was black. When it came out it silver and I felt let down. I went with the Sammy 950 Pro instead.

Way to go. I knew you would get it. I cannot wait to hear the "hands-on" review.

Yeah life is short. I am fixing to have the nicest system I have ever owned and very stable. I am hoping to settle in during the cold season and play some games. I love the 850 Pro. I have had mine for a while now and I don't see getting rid of it I have had up to 700GB on it before but it is only a storage drive and never gets hot. I can not think of a better backup drive to buy right now than the 1TB 850 Pro.

That is a good deal, I think I paid $500 or more.

...and that's why I got it, to use as storage when Optane is a bit more affordable. Good price with use of points and no tax. I can't complain. They're $450 at Amazon.

Re: Intel Optane SSD 900P 480GB NVME 3D XPoint!

I don't think the 900P is the fastest on paper. The reads and writes are only in the 2000's and it is expensive but love the looks of it and it is Intel.

Yeah reads are 2500 and writes are 2000 but its the 4K that is awesome and it never slows down, even if the drive is full....I'm going for the 280 gig when its available, I only use about 150 gig so that would be enough, especially if I install games on my 950 Pro. I would like to see some people who have bought it reviews?

Well I can tell you if it is Intel it will be good, stable, supported, and last a long time.

Re: Intel Optane SSD 900P 480GB NVME 3D XPoint!

I found one review from a guy who has the 480 gig version over at [H], didn't say anything how it felt but here's is benchmarks and his temps at idle....39C is not good at idle...the top drive he's comparing it to is a Intel 750 400 gig drive!
