Windows Home Server 2011

The RC is out. You can get it here:
WINDOWS HOME SERVER | Microsoft Connect
The RTM will probably be available on TechNet by mid year.

I tried installing the RC on my test rig. It doesn't allow you to choose an existing partition on the HDD for install. It overwrites all existing partitions on the HDD you chose to install on and creates 3 of it's own: 100MB, 60GB and the remaining space. The second physical HDD I have on the board was left as is.
I played around with it a little bit and then deleted all the partitions and put my Windows 7 image back on, using Acronis TI.
I'm considering building a server box (RAID 1) and installing the RTM on it when it becomes available on TechNet, just because I've never had or built a server before and it seems like a cool thing to do.
But, I'm not sure what I would use it for. I have at least 2 physical HDDs in all my rigs and create internal images weekly on each using Acronis TI. And, I don't share media between the PCs or other devices.
Although I think it would be a cool learning experience to build and setup a server, I'm just not sure I would actually have any use for it.

Thoughts?

Re: Windows Home Server 2011

I always wanted the give WHS a try ... I even ordered the disk from M$ but never installed it a few years ago.

Fact is I use a XP box with shared printers and data hdd that addresses my needs very well. It has a 80GB OS hdd and a 1TB data hdd. I also have a WD World edition 2 x 1 TB network hdd that I backup the XP box to once a month. It stores movies, music and family user photos and data.

My very 1st system was a FreeNas but it did not support printer sharing ...

Yeah, I was thinking that if all I wanted to do was backup HDD images and data to a central location and share media, that this would be the simplest and cheapest way to do it:
Newegg.com - Western Digital WDBACG0020HCH-NESN 2TB My Book Live Home Network Drive

However there is still the challenge of building and learning to use a server...

Learning to build a server would be fun. Hey PeterT your above link isn't working.

I always have a problem accessing Newegg links on this site. That one doesn't work for me either.
Here's the Newegg product ID: N82E16822136746

Re: Windows Home Server 2011

This looks like a nice board to build a RAID 1 (Mirrored) home server on:
Newegg.com - Intel BOXDG45ID LGA 775 Intel G45 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
If the link doesn't work, the product ID is: N82E16813121355
Add a cheap C2D CPU, 4GB RAM, 2x 2TB HDDs and you'd have a nice home server for backups and media sharing.
Now for a case and PSU...

Re: Windows Home Server 2011

If you don't need printer sharing, this may be a solution ...
Western Digital My Book World Edition ll 2TB 3.5" External Hard Drive : Desktop External Hard Drives - Best Buy Canada

I use one to backup my shared XP box once a month ... although I could leave it on all the time, it would backup as required.

Re: Windows Home Server 2011

Im still not sure what to do with a WHS..
From what Ive read on another forum it's aimed to be an easy way to set up a windows network station for the "average joe"

Re: Windows Home Server 2011

I've done Windows Home Server since it's first iteration.....

Best investment I've made.....

Decent server.....

For a non server kind of guy....

Thinking about using my Tech Net subscription and downloading this latest-----and building my own....

But also waiting to see what OEMs will offer it in a package with hardware....

My original WHS is a cute, quiet little HP that has run like a top (HP EX-485) for over two years.....

In fact----the whole thing has been so dependable that I'm not sure I NEED to upgrade...LOL
