Intel Delays Three Quad-core CPUs On AMD's Problems

Intel has recently adjusted its product strategy and will postpone three 45nm quad-core CPUs that were originally scheduled to launch in January next year, according to sources at motherboard makers.
Intel has already notified its partners that it will push back the launch of the three CPUs to February or March next year, depending on AMD's schedule for triple-core and the upcoming Phenom CPUs.
Launching the CPUs now will not benefit Intel much in its battle with AMD, while they could cause damage to Intel's 65nm quad-core CPUs, therefore the company has decided it is in no rush to release new products until AMD is able to present more of a threat.

Exactly what I'd do too.

Re: Intel Delays Three Quad-core CPUs On AMD's Problems

BOO!!! It's really starting to p iss me off that all the parts I want to use keep getting delayed!!

edit: to all the people that would like to see AMD fold. That is exactually what you are going to get without them. Delays and looong periods between tech advances.

I agree that it sucks for people that were planning on buying one of the new Penryn CPU's in January...guess the only option is to buy the $1000 part...hopefully Intel will lower the price on that sometime in January

We might not know the real reason Intel is delaying the Penryn. From the looks of the QX9650 Intel has the capability down. What does a delay do for AMD, it doesn't create any more revenue for them right now since they are basically on hold with quad-core. Waiting for Phenom/Barcelona to get fixed and then releasing Penryn will be even more of a smack in the face on AMD's new release. Is Intel doing it to look samaritan? Who knows.

You are lucky to find the retail box QX9560 for $1200 and I doubt it will come down in price. Intel may use this time to sort out the X48 some more, it does not seem to be ready.

I was going to wait until February anyway before upgrading due to the launch of the new Nvidia cards at that time...hopefully by that time the X48 chipset, the Nvidia 9000 series cards and the new Penryn CPU's will be out (even the new Phenum CPU's with the irratum fix)...that will be one sweet system if everything comes together

Re: Intel Delays Three Quad-core CPUs On AMD's Problems

They're stealing PR thunder, naturally. AMD is going to push the fixed version of Barcelona. I have a feeling they have some enhancements beyond bugfixin's in store and can crank out higher-frequency parts (perhaps a special bin of 3GHz Black Beauties or what they call 'em). That will be trumpeted, and if Intel pushes back the launch of their new chips, that are going to be faster, they can make it so AMD has an afternoon of media coverage before the benchmarks and reviews of the Penryn quads drop and stirs things up.

Exactly my plans, but now they are just saying Q1 which could mean through april! Of course Intel isn't going to drop the price on the XE when they have the best out and AMD has nothing to compete. I think you guys are nuts thinking this is a good thing. Intel is not doing this to look like a "good samaritan" they are doing it because they can. They will sell many more $1000+ parts this way. Probably all the reasonably priced Penryns will be sitting in a warehouse/s somewhere until it makes them the most money to put them out. I think this is just a taste of the butt reaming will will take when Intel and Nvidia get a further and further lead.

edit: correction. I guess Q1 would mean through March

Re: Intel Delays Three Quad-core CPUs On AMD's Problems

Are the dual core Penryn's still on track to be released on Jan 8th? I hope Intel has a large supply, so there's no price gouging for the first couple of weeks.

I'd say you were lucky alright. The ETA if you order now from that site is 1/14/08
