Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

So today I had to ask for a painkiller prescription that was more potent that the hydrocodone elixer I've been taking since May. Looks like I'll be taking methadone at night and the usual stuff during the day.

That stomach problem I talked about has been joined by some really tough lower back pain, both of which wake me up around 2am and keep me up until I take more drugs and the pain abates a bit.
The lower back pain is from my enforced inactivity due to the chemo and the general lack of energy forced upon me by the cancer and its treatment. The stomach issue is related to how the cancer has completely frackked up my appetite and eating cycles.

I spent most of yesterday in glorious comfort laying on a heating pad cranked up to solar surface levels. That and soaking in a hot bath (not at the same time of course - that would be so MTV) are almost the only times I am completely pain free. As seductive as that is, though, I can't do it all the time because that's just more of the same: laying around.

I did get up and try to walk around the block today. I made it about fifty yards until I had to turn back, ironically due to lower back pain and not fatigue.
I went back in, rested a little, then went back out and walked up and down the steep hill just outside my house. I did that three times then came in and did some work with the medicine ball...some lower back raises (got to get that back working!) and some stretching.
The week before I did chemo that hill would kick my butt just walking it once. I'll take three times as an improvement.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Three times down and up a hill that was a problem to do once before the chemo seems like a lot to me...certainly a big endurance improvement! Good luck with the lower back...I think most of us have had a lower back issue at one time or another...goes with the human condition ...here's hoping the heat therapy helps, back pain is certainly no fun. Have you been able to resume normal eating patterns? The body loves routine. You sound like things are going generally well, so good luck and positive thoughts...and stardust ofc!

You're hanging tough my friend. Any walking, moving around will help. When I had heart bypass surgery. I was so weak I could only walk inside the house. But even that helped. It does sound like you are improving....

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Great spirit you have. I am sure you will get some walking in this evening. It is not a easy task when you are so weak after a major treatment. It sounds like you are improving each day, keep up the will to improve and you can do it. Prayers and good thoughts are with you. It is two months today since I came home from Bypass surgery. I can walk about three miles a day now. I just came in from mowing half of my lawn. Will have a short rest and go back out and finish it.

Be CAREFUL with methadone, it's MORE DIFFICULT to kick than heroin! It's a necessary evil though, and I hope you find some releif from the pain. Some of your stomach problems MAY be due to the pain meds. I know a LOT of people puke and feel ill when first adjusting to high doses of opiates. Maybe it's the chemo, but BEWARE of SEVERE constipation (that's not a joke) which may be the cause of your stomach pain. Another wonderful side effect of opiates. The back pain I have no idea what the cause is. Be strong, sounds like you're doing OK all things considered!!!!

I know exactly what it is because it's happened before: my back always gives me difficulty when a period of inactivity is forced upon me. It happens every time I am off my feet for three days or more.
Having been off my feet for closer to three months means it just hurts that much more.

Dilaudid is what worked for my wife's back. She only takes it when the pain gets severe and at night because she doesn't like the way it makes her feel when awake.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Funny...I took the methadone last night and it was completely transparent. Aside from a reduction in back pain I felt nothing. With Vicodin/Hydrocodone I get a really pleasant buzz that is stimulating without being wired.
The methadone didn't work all that well, though. I still woke up at 2:30; why my body chooses this same time night after night is a mystery to me.
It was supposed to keep me from pain all night but it didn't. I eventually took another dose of the Hydrocodone elixir and managed to get back to sleep.

Deer Slayer: I'm aware of Hydrocodone's penchant for stomach upset but I've never had that happen to me. I do keep it in mind, though. I've heard that the drug affects people differently, which seems to be true of most opiates.

I did the hill five times this morning. Poor Belle kept giving me this "we're not going anywhere, Dad" look. When I got back inside I sat down for a minute and noticed I was having that glorious feeling of physical well being I always get after a workout. I realized at that moment how much I have missed that sensation. Tomorrow I'll push it even further.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

I managed seven loops up the hill this morning. Even broke a sweat. Came back in and did sixty lower back raises and forty crunches on my exercise ball.
A tiny fraction of what I used to do but it beats being in bed.
