Re: Gold: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Doing another replay of SoC using the Complete mod, which I'm enjoying a great deal. It's also helping to wash away the stylized look and feel of Dishonored, Borderlands2 and Bioshock Infinite that I've been playing recently.

The game looks awesome still and is as spooky and atmospheric as ever with a very high level of challenge. It looks like a contemporary game with the graphical improvements that the mod provides, even still holding up today.

But I've just realised I don't like that the repair tool kits repair my armor and I think it's a design flaw.
I've found a few of these kits and repairing my armor means I never need to manage the suits, in fact I dont even bother stashing them anymore as I'm pretty happy with my current SEVA. This detracts from some of the tension because in the original game suit health played a big part in the approach to the tactical strategy and I was always carrying a spare, and had them stashed.

The other thing I notice this time through is because they've cleaned up and clarified the dialog trees that some of the original charm of the broken English is gone. This would be fine in Clear Sky, where the dialog was often hammy, but I think it detracts here.

Anyhow, I've just defeated Borov again (for the umpteenth time) but this time using total stealth! This is difficult because the AI is highly sensitive to movement, torch light and sound, but it can be done. Heh.

The only other complaint this time around is once again related to the mod; the night vision is too good - lighting everything up in b&w like day almost. The original game had fairly grainy low level night vision, which was much more scary.
Night play in this game is completely different to day and incredibly scary and fun. Anyway, the mod has made the sky's so realistic looking (both night and day) that I'll forgive it

Re: Gold: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Finished the game using the Complete mod. Still a very awesome game. Very much like reading an old favourite book.

The Complete mod is really nice, with only a couple of glitches. For instance at one point every zombified stalker had Gordon Freeman's skin.
Being able to teleport to different locations (fast travel) is just not consistent with the originals emphasis on exploration and its too easy to miss stuff. I didn't use it in the end.

Tool kits feel like a cheat as I mentioned earlier, but fortunately there's not many of them. I did use the sleeping bag a lot. Tended to enjoy travelling during the day. Don't see any point to it for a newbie though. I'd be recommending not to use that for anyone's first play through otherwise they will miss out on some really scary night fights, (not to mention awesomely welcome and spectacular sunrises afterwards!).

The game is left open for the player at the end (provided you chose the right ending) but its not very satisfactory because the NPC's don't have new dialog so what they say is not really consistent with what's happened, although you can go to a bunch of firefights with all your acquired gear still in your inventory.

I can recommend the mod to new stalkers, provided they follow the advice above about teleport and sleeping bag, just don't use them.

SoC is truly a great game IMO, mod or in original flavour. One of the best aspects is that it respects the player's intelligence. There is so much the player is tasked with to do in this game and you better be paying attention. I still believe its up there with Half Life as far as memorable impact goes.

I'll have to give CoP a replay next using the complete mod. Should be awesome as that game was even better than SoC.

As for CS I'm not so sure. I may just skip that this time. Still a good game but the story wasn't particularly interesting the first time around.

Haunting video showing a man revisiting his home in the exclusion zone.
Many scenes may feel "familiar" in an eery kind of way...

Re: Gold: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

A forest fire has broken out near the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine, the scene of the world's worst civil nuclear disaster in 1986, but poses no danger to the site, officials said.

Around 200 firefighters with scores of vehicles were battling the inferno and aircraft were dumping water on the flames, the state emergency services said.

A state nuclear inspection official said "the level of radiation at the Chernobyl plant has not changed".

They hastily laid over the reactor site a concrete cover dubbed "the sarcophagus", which is now cracking and must be replaced.

Ukraine's president Petro Poroshenko on Sunday inspected ongoing work on a new 20,000-tonne steel cover - a project estimated to cost more than two billion euros ($2.7 billion).

The structure will contain technology that will act beneath the cover to decontaminate the area once the steel layer is in place. Officials say the new cover will last for 100 years.
