There's a program called produkey that will do it on xp, but I just tried it and it doesn't work on Vista....

ProduKey - Recover lost product key (CD-Key) of Windows/MS-Office/SQL Server

It wouldn't hurt to check there from time to time for updates....If his pc won't boot, where is he getting his product ID number from?

if he can boot his pc, try downloading magic jellybean finder, (looking it up on google, should be first link, I cant post URL's cause im new 2 the forums lol) itll display the cdkey. . . i dnt kno if itll work 4 vista. . .

if the pc wont boot, try reinstalling vista with the recovery cd's im guessing M.S provided. Tha should fix the booting problem then jst run magic jellybean finder to display the cd key which will validate his Vista so he can get updates etc. If that doesnt work. . . Call M.S lol
