Does anybody know of any decent free/cheap model making software that can export in *.3ds?

Re: Free 3D model making software

I think the free and trial versions of software don't export into well known formats to keep people from using them for their work.

Maybe Blender? blender.org - Home

It's been a long time since I used it but I believe Rhino lets you save to 3ds files in the evaluation version. You'll only get a limited number of saves though.

Re: Free 3D model making software

Blender is a good option: blender.org

Another option is Wings3D: wings3d.com

And finally BRL-CAD, one of the oldest CAD software out there: brlcad.org

All are free, and all are battle tested

Re: Free 3D model making software

A quick google search for "blender 3ds exporter" turns up a few results, but a lot of people have problems with them.

Re: Free 3D model making software

Wings3D.

Prefer it to any other 3D modeler, as it's fast to model in it, and is v-e-r-y ergonomical. Also have the cleanest GUI of any 3D modeler (no Blender3D nightmare).

No, it won't do animations. No it's just beginning to add some UV and texturing capabilities -- but as a modeler, you won't find one that is faster to use and get a job done.
