Virtualbox 2.0.0 released (64-bit guests!)

VirtualBox

64-bit guest support has been added, yay! It only works on 64-bit hosts.

There are some glitches with this release, as any .0 release should have. So far on my Vista x64 host I see OS/2 guests are broken, OpenSolaris 64-bit isn't working, and I can't get guest additions to install in Server 2003 x64. Grumble. 2003 x64 is very usable though, unlike in Hyper-V and VMWare where 64-bit guests seemed to run in slideshow mode.

However, it seems to be a bit buggy. I noticed in the dmesg that there are some issue with the MTRR which were not previously present with latter versions. This is a x64 host for a x86 guest.

I just started playing with it - interesting so far. It's working fine for me running 64b Ubuntu with Vista 64b as the host.

It works for me. But I can see where it needs some polish in the dmesg after the upgrade. When it did not have these messages before. Actually I am 64bit Vista host 32bit Fedora/Ubuntu guest.

Re: Virtualbox 2.0.0 released (64-bit guests!)

It only supports one logical processor unit

I was using it to run some tests on smp FAH (the windows version is more of a pita than it is in Linux. But only one CPU being used is a deal breaker

I'll have to see how many the free version of VMWare supports. It used to support two - but since I have a QUAD I like to find a free virtual machine that supports 4 logical cpus, otherwise l'll need to wait an mess around with winders.

Re: Virtualbox 2.0.0 released (64-bit guests!)

It's fairly nice. Or, well, I'm using an older 1.x version. KVM seemed faster to me, though. Both using the virtualization thingamajig in the Core 2. I'm running Ubuntu as the host.

The guest additions for XP were a treat, though. Good stuff.

Re: Virtualbox 2.0.0 released (64-bit guests!)

I have always used Intel's-VT option and actually found it to be faster. But the readme did mention slow downs with AMD's-V. Also in the readme are many fixes for it too.
