just read a review of the game (was a reveiew of the Xbox version but the same gameplay applies to both so the review still holds true for the PC version)...

"In fact, Bethesda really did nail the tone and content that the series is famous for. That 'feeling of Fallout' that we touched on earlier is never more apparent than when you immerse yourself in the seedier underbelly of post-apocalyptica; the rampant prostitution, the slavery and class imbalances, the debaucherous and frivolous lifestyles of the wealthy and corrupt, the displaced, the hardened and the downtrodden"

"Morality and consequences are two interconnected elements of the game design and have been since the original games and to a similar extent in Bethesda's RPGs too. The framework for your moral compass rests within the decisions you make in conversations, your approach to handling conflicts and quests, as well as whether you tend to help yourself to other peoples' belongings or plant live hand-grenades on them when they're not looking"

"Overall, it's one of the finest looking games of this generation"

"30 core quests, plus loads of incidental missions, hidden bobble-heads, side-areas, weapons and more. Hundreds of hours of potential gameplay here"

"There's a level of immersion here, thanks to the micro-detailing on the ground, the naturalistic wear of the land and the man-made objects still dotting the landscape. It's a feeling of wonder and of true exploration"

"Fallout 3 is one of the best games of recent years...Fallout 3 can't help but satisfy and engage you in ways that very few games ever have"

damn!!...the reviews are pouring in and this sounds like an old school classic...maybe even all time great game...the nay sayers might just have to re-evaluate their pre release opinions

WhiteEclipse: one of the reviews mentions the humor aspect you alluded to earlier and states that it is most definitely still there...looks like the game also stays true to the Fallout series and is a 'landmark game' (based on numerous reviews)

too much good stuff to quote so you're gonna just have to read the reviews yourself...

this is for mindx2 and anyone else who thinks that this is just 'Oblivion with guns' or a Fallout game in name only...taken from 2 separate reviews:

"When it was first announced that Bethesda would be developing Fallout 3, many assumed this would be "Oblivion with guns." While that isn't such a bad prospect, it isn't the case. The heart of the game, experience points, level progression, and character development, runs on an entirely different system. Everything is governed by the base attributes that follow the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (an acronym for each of the 7 base stats) system. Each of these, in turn, play into individual skills which can be improved through leveling up. And, of course, various things you find in the game such as bobblehead collectibles, books, and certain types of armor can further improve your stats.

Unlike Oblivion, you won't be able to perform repetitive actions like swimming or jumping and expect to gain levels. XP is gained through combat, completing quests, finding locations, picking locks and hacking terminals. And that's it. All experience points go into a single pool and when you level up you get to choose how you want to distribute your skill points. These points aren't tied to your actions at all, so you're free to play as you want and then allocate the points to whatever skills you find most important."

Review 2

"In the end, Fallout 3 feels like a Fallout game, and that is absolutely the highest compliment. Despite the changes, much of the charm and fun of the franchise remains intact, and despite the similarities to Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, I never felt that I was playing anything but a Fallout game. The majority of my complaints are problems that also existed in the prior titles, and nothing in particular detracted from the experience. Fallout 3 is a game with a ridiculous amount of value for your money and easily worth the full $60. This isn't Oblivion: With Guns, but an honest-to-goodness Fallout 3, and a fine addition to the franchise"

Re: Fallout 3

Did they remove auto-leveling or was it modified? I remember reading that the world was broken up into "zones," and the enemies would be auto-leveled once you entered that zone for the first time. They would not go up later, but if you had entered that zone earlier or later, they would be higher or lower.

Trust me polonyc2, I really want this game to be good. I love the originals. But I'm not upset at all that the interface is different, or that it is 3d. The atmosphere, writing, CHOICES, consequences are what concerns me.

I'm not saying that those reviews are wrong, but I also remember how glossy the reviews were for oblivion when it came out.

I'm going to get it at some point and play it, but I reserve the right to complain.

Re: Fallout 3

BTW, Circuitcity has the game for $49.99. But you also get a $10 gift card and a mini-strategy guide. The mini guide is worthless (I saw it), but it comes with a 25% off coupon for the guide, which is already marked down to 14.99.

Now follow me, if you turn around and hand the cashier the coupon and the $10 gift card, you can buy the guide for $1.25. Pretty good deal.

all the reviews I've read so far indicate that they are all intact and implemented very well

Circuit City used to always sell games $5 cheaper but I noticed they stopped doing that recently and now sell them for the regular retail price

I bought the game from my local GameStop store earlier today...installed, defragged my system and I'm ready to go...

Re: Fallout 3

No thanks on this game, I don't like having Games For Windows Live software installed on my computer without permission. I found this out, after having a look at the manual, and no where does it say that the Games For Windows Live software will also be installed.

Very doubtful. The system will likely take the $10 off before the 25%.

Re: Fallout 3

The Official XBOX Magazine gave it 3 out of 10.

I wonder if these guys weren't bribed by Bethesda. The game is obviously very buggy, and the original rating was 3 out of 10, and all of a sudden they go and give it a 10 out of 10. It most definitely smells like they were bribed by Bethesda to give it a positive review.

obviously buggy?...according to who?...so all the sites giving such high praise to the game are all being bribed? ...sounds like someone is cranky or just hating on Bethseda...even if they really did give the game a 3 out of 10, I would trust a more widespread collection of reviews over any 1 in particular (to eliminate any biases)...along with reviews from well known and trusted sources
