Do cable modems wear out?

I have had the same Motorola Surfboard for about four years now. It is getting a ton of dropped connections (say three an hour) that require resetting the modem. It is a pain in the as to say the least. Do modems go bad intermittently, or just quit working when something is wrong? I put my neighbors modem on and it is rock solid. Mine worked great up until this summer when I was gone. My surge protector says surge, but everything on it still works.

Yes, they do go bad like that. I had a Toshiba that did the same thing.

Re: Do cable modems wear out?

Yes Cable Modems can go bad after 4 to 5 years of use, I had a Motorola Surfboard 5100 do this last fall, as it started dying.

Another thing is you NEED a new surge supressor. They're only designed to absorb ONE surge, then the MOVs (Metal Oxide Varisistors) go bad. You might be able to get the suge supressor company eat it under their warranty. Anyways, the cable modem got hosed by a surge, time for a new one.

Re: Do cable modems wear out?

i've got a router here that periodically locks up... PITA ... but its not often enough to warrant replacing it... the modem (same one spookyload) just keeps on keeping on...

Re: Do cable modems wear out?

PUt a new modem in. Went to speakeasy.net and ran a speedtest. Actually I have run about ten of them to make sure. The old modem would pull 4.5Mb, the new one is 7.6Mb at the slowest and up to 7.9. I didn't even know my line was provisioned for 8Mb till I called the cable company. Not sure if the old modem never got provisioned correctly to the new speed, but there is a definate speed increase with the new modem.

Re: Do cable modems wear out?

I've had a Motorola Surfboard 5100 go belly up on me as well. It happens, nothing lasts forever as a general rule.
