Talking Finally did it ... bought my first Mac

Just before xmas I ordered it from the Apple store in Canada.

Mac mini
2.26GHz : 160GB
2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB memory - 1066MHz frontside bus
160GB hard drive1
8x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
Mac OS X Snow Leopard + iLife

Free shipping and it arrived in 3 days.

This is the first system I purchased complete(besides netbooks) since 2002 ... I have been building pc's since joining this forum in 2002.

I've been keeping an eye out and almost got a used one a few times but since Apple launched the upgraded models and lowered the price, I figured the time was right.

I became interested a while back when I discovered the OS has a Unix base ** very similar to Linux. I have been using various linux distros for years, at home I basically use linux except when gaming. However, I'm not much of a gamer, still playing FarCry2 for the 3rd time, and have decided I need to do something with all the family photos and movies we have accumulated.

Getting it going was quite painless until it came to finding a printer the OS would recognize. I had an HP Deskjet 940c which seems to be recognized by every OS on earth but the ink has dried out and the replacement ink costs more than buying a new printer. Anyways, surrounded by 5 printers I discovered open source Linux / OSX drivers for my Konica Minolta 2400W laser color printer which has been sitting unused with almost full cartridges for over a year.

I also put a 500GB HDD in an inclosure, formated it HFS+ extended and started to use Time Machine and recently purchased a iomega MiniMax external hhd which looks like the Mini and has built in USB and firewire hubs. I use this hdd to import videos from my camera to since the mini only comes with a 160GB hdd ...

I also had no issues connecting to my home network ... hassle free like in Linux.

I used an LG W2243T LCD at 1920 x 1080, a old Compaq usb keyboard and a MS usb mouse.

**
In 1997, Apple Computer sought out a new foundation for its Macintosh operating system and chose NEXTSTEP, an operating system developed by NeXT. The core operating system, which was based on BSD and the Mach kernel, was renamed Darwin after Apple acquired it. The deployment of Darwin in Mac OS X makes it, according to a statement made by an Apple employee at a USENIX conference, the most widely used Unix-based system in the desktop computer market.

!!TRAITOR!!

Congrats on your new purchase. As a gamer I stay FAR AWAY from Macs as they get almost zero attention from game makers (or if they do it's an after thought).

DITTO! I thought about playing with an OS X virtual machine, but then I wouldn't know what to do with it. Is the video a replacable PCI e card now? That would be a step up fram the hard wired not so great video they have had in the past.

Re: Finally did it ... bought my first Mac

It's going very well ... a present to myself

I got it at the end of November and the wife was not happy to say the least to see yet another computer in the house SO I unloaded two systems and a bunch of parts enough to cover the purchased along with the monitor.

In Canada it sells for 649$ but I got an education discount of 50$ so that was 676$ including taxes with free shipping. If you check regularly on the apple site, they sell reburbs for 549$ CAD of this same model.

I have always liked small computers ... lord knows I've built enough of them. The Mac OS aside, it's a really nice little system on it's own. The price really came down after the recent update at the end of October. a 2Ghz mini with 1GB or ram and a 120GB hdd was 739$ CAD before the update. Since you can use any usb mouse and keyboard along with any LCD or CRT, the cost is not that bad.

Snow Leopard with iLife 09 is also polished and runs very well.

Re: Finally did it ... bought my first Mac

It's been already a year and I still use it everyday.

It is a welcome change from using a pc and despite having pc's all over the house including netbooks and laptops, I am quite fond of it.

I use a pc when I have work to do, I use my Mac when I want to relax ... that about sums it up.

I got the upgrade itch this weekend so I ordered 4GB of ram and a 7200rpm 640GB hdd for it.

Re: Finally did it ... bought my first Mac

The hdd came in yesterday so I cloned it over using SuperDuper but got some update prebinding errors. Being a total Mac noob it took me a while to figure out that I needed to repair permissions in disk utility since I recently installed iLife 11 and there was a major OS update last week as well. Anyways, that fixed it.

Just received 4GB of ram today and the next step is the open up the Mini and swap out the ram and hdd.

Re: Finally did it ... bought my first Mac

It's the kind of computer you just use.
Although I have many pc's. I am always taking them apart or selling them so, besides the old ones I use for dedicated tasks, I rarely have a pc for very long.

I purchased a used Mini a while back, did a few upgrades and resold it ... it's crazy what people will pay for a used Mac.
