Unexpected Shutdowns on Vista

I have Vista Home Premium x32 with SP2 installed running on an Intel motherboard Core2 Quad with 3GB memory and a nvida 8800GT video board, and a Corsair 550 Watt P/S , two 500GB drives with plenty of free space.

My system fan speeds up to full speed and then re-boots. The only warning I get is the fan noise. This happens 5 or 6 times then it won't happen again for a couple days...or weeks. It seems to happen within 1 minute of 60 minutes from the last time it rebooted.... no kidding, within a minute of 60 minutes. The problems seems to start around 5 PM and stops rebooting after 11 PM. I checked the task scheduler for scheduled tasks, no clues.

Anyway, I thought I would check the event logs for a clue. The Event tracker, Administrative Events, only shows an entry when it boots backup that "The previous system shutdown at 10:07:21 PM on 1/11/2010 was unexpected". The next entry tells me "Audit events have been dropped by the transport. The real time backup file was corrupt due to improper shutdown." Sooo, I get no clues.

I noticed that the Shutdown Event Tracker was not available so I looked for a way to turn it on. Vista, at least my version, does not have the gpedit.msc (Group policy console editor?) and other articles indicated that is what I needed to activate the Tracker. Can anyone tell me how to enable the Shutdown Event Tracker?

Is it still part of Vista Home Premium?

Anyone care to take a shot at the cause of my reboots?

Re: Unexpected Shutdowns on Vista

Sure sounds like an overheating problem to me. What is the CPU usage in task manager when the fan spins up? Have you checked the CPU temp before and during the fan spin up? Is it the CPU fan that is spinning up and not some other fan? Are you sure the CPU heatsink and fan are installed correctly? You could use Speedfan to log CPU temp.

Can you give more details about your PC. Mother board model, case used, heatsink/fan used and how its connected. Number of case fans used and how they are connected etc.
