What is the best anti virus software to get?

What is the best anti virus software to get?
I am getting a new Dell laptop. I am spending about $1,400 on it and want to make sure it last and remains fast. I want to get a good anti virus software for it but don't want it to slow my computer down, but I do want it to fully protect my laptop from viruses and hackers. I am willing to pay money for it so whatever the best anti virus there is is what I want. I will have windows 7 professional on it as well.

Re: What is the best anti virus software to get?

XJ, I wouldn't take this inquiry too seriously. A quick Google search reveals that an identically worded question has been posted at dozens of other forums, under the same and other screen-names. I'll leave the thread up, mainly out of curiosity, to see if he or she returns to provide an av recommendation under a different guise.

Best regards,
-- Al

AV-comparatives is reputable and more up to date though their last proactive test is from May of 2010. On demand tests August 2010. See their performance testing also. More performance testing here. Under September 2010 download "Consumer Antivirus Performance 2011 second edition report" PDF.

Personally I recommend Avast 5 free/paid or Norton IS 2011. Symantec has really worked hard to lighten their AV and IS products so they do not hog systems down. I played with NIS 2010 and found it very light and I loved the GUI. NIS 2011 should be even better from what I have read. Avast 5 has the best GUI of any program I have ever used. It has decent protection and is very light. I ended up buying a 2 year 3 PC license for Avast 5 IS. I found it more configurable than NIS and I freaking love the GUI.

Keep in mind no security product can protect you 100%. So use a manual scanner such as MBAM Free or SAS for better protection.

Bill

Re: What is the best anti virus software to get?

Thanks wonderwrench, you make some good points. I stand corrected. I use Norton AV 2011. I just realized I don't have anything but the Windows Firewall running ATM

I'll be getting IS as soon as I fix my Comcast account (at least they said that Norton IS comes free with my subscription).

Symantec was a train wreck starting around 2001 or so. NIS black boxed my rig after an update twice over a six month period I said never again. Uninstaller problems and being a huge system hog were big enough deals to stay away. A few months back I got the wife a new laptop and it came with NIS 2010. I figured it was as good a time as any to take NIS for a road beat. I almost could not believe it, NIS was no longer a hog and the GUI was really nice. NAV and NIS always had great protection but now you no longer need a cray or big blue to run it. I almost purchased a 3 PC license and would have if I was not a huge Avast fan. BTW NIS uninstalled without problems and did a fair job of cleaning up after itself. Still ran the removal tool just to play it safe. Its kinda nice to see Symantec work hard cleaning up their code and adding features that really do something. The new GUI is just icing on the cake.

I agree! I bricked a computer by uninstalling an earlier version of Norton. I had to go into safe mode and manually delete NAV related files

I had avoided Norton for over five years.

But a couple years ago I got Norton 360 to replace Zone Alarm, and have no regrets.

Microsoft Security Essentials is amazing. Its free and pretty light on resources.

Yes I agree it is a very good program. I have been using it since it was in Beta stage, have never had a virus or anything else since switching to it from TrendMicro. Any builds or repairs I do and people want A/V thats what I install.

Yup its free and is OK protection. It has the best removal engine of any product period. But light on resources, I disagree. MSE uses more ram than nearly every other product at 94 megs. Avira 10 free uses 21 megs and Avast 5 Free uses 36 megs. NAV 2011 uses 24 megs. MSE uses almost 700 megs of disk space. Avira 10 free uses 103 megs, Avast 5 Free uses 147 megs. NAV 2011 uses 190 megs. MSE slows disk performance more than most other products. Have a look at this PDF and see for your self. Testing was done by Passmark Software.

In my testing MSE is usable on higher end hardware but older boxes with limited ram no way. Even though it runs OK on higher end hardware why kill disk performance.
