Re: Windows 8;

All I can say is the answer is in Microsoft's FAQ
And actually according to your theory.. well Microsoft would still be supporting and patching Win 95, 2000 etc?
Quote:
Mainstream phase: In the prime of a product's life, Microsoft provides both free and paid live support, support for warranty claims and online self-help support information. Software support and maintenance is extensive and free, with downloadable fixes and updates, service packs and freely available support for problem incidents, as well as requests for design changes and new features. Business customers may pay for additional support.
Extended phase: Free live support and warranty support end, and free maintenance of consumer products is limited to security fixes. Self-help support information remains available online. Pay-per-incident live support remains available. Software patches and updates continue for business desktop software.
End of life: Online support information is removed. Patches and updates cease. The product is history.

Re: Windows 8;

End of life is different than end of support. When end of support begins you still can get support, but not for free. Operating system patches do not end until end of life has been reached. I will not respond to this anymore. If by now you don't get it well....forget it. OK?

Re: Windows 8;

After considerable investigation on this I could not find any wording about getting "critical security updates through automatic updates" after ending support by microsoft for an operating system. In two years on May patch Tuesday I will let you know if this is the fact and return to this post with an update on this matter. Case closed for now. See you here in two years.

Re: Windows 8;

The hope for desktop PC users is MS may release a Win-8 version that has start menu desktop UI option. If this happens and is what you want, make sure you get the right version when it goes finale in Oct. BTW that'll be the only way I would buy it.

Re: Windows 8;

I didn't see this issue discussed in the thread so please indulge me, but does anyone remember what the term "Laputan Machine" refers to?

I won't be adopting W8 for that reason.

Re: Windows 8;

Thanks for the article radeonized2, very interesting I actually ended up putting Windows 8 back on my system, after formatting it off when I couldn't get my games to work,
however have them working ok now, and have added my own 'Start' menu to the tool bar just the way I like it, except it is now on the right hand side, but hey, it works!!

Re: Windows 8;

Cool. I am going to skip win-8 like i did vista and ME. If win-9 doesn't give desktop users a desktop OS I will skip it too.
