I just am finished reinstalling Win-7 and I had to install the MB e-nic drivers first off in order to go online and get OS updates. Then Win-7 did not have the onboard sound drivers up to date,chipset,usb's,sata, and the videocard drivers. Am I doing something wrong or what?

Re: Welcolm to Windows 8;

Drivers on Windows Update are a failsafe.. in my opinion anyway
I always make sure I download and save the latest drivers from the hardware sites

Re: Welcolm to Windows 8;

I never use win update to install drivers. The only win update driver that is showing up is for the videocard. I have a laptop too and the install disc I got with it already contains all the drivers it needs too. All the rest of my comp are custom builds no manuf OS disc included.

Re: Welcolm to Windows 8;

I guess since my hardware is older all my stuff is in W7....with the newer hardware you still need to go with the manufactures site! Nvidia drivers off the update page work just fine on my 470, same with my Creative sound card!

When reinstall XP on vertually any system It is easier than Win-7. I use nlite and driverpacks along with a few of my favorite addons like firefox and ccleaner just to mention a couple and all that is needed is a few updates from MS and I mean very few. I intergrate media player 11 includeing most of the updates for it. I intergrate most of MS update post SP-3 as well. It takes time to prepare this install DVD of XPSP3 but with the answer file on the setup disc too once the setup starts it's completely unattended and I can leave go to the store or whatever and when I comeback it is done in about 20 minutes.

Re: Welcolm to Windows 8;

[QUOTE=traveler;1492057]I still run win98se on one of my computers and like it. Some great games still run better on win98se and not at all on win7.
I know of some who still run 98SE and like it as well. Driver support for newer hardware are not available to make it limited in that respect. That in time will be the way of XP as well. MS knowing this, will never support Win-7 as long as they did with XP as they saw the error in that so realising this turn of events I will be forced to abandon Win-7 and pay microsoft even when I don't want to.

Propaganda and strongarming us they will again and again.

Nlite is a fine tool, well that's what makes the world go around different strokes for different folks! LOL

Re: Welcolm to Windows 8;

I like win-7 just fine but I am only hanging on to one XP for the one reason. I have a few old games that won't run on Win7 and I really like to play them. I should mention Win7 drivers are about two years old now on the install disc I mean.

I understand, I'm still on the fence when it comes to cloud computing (I see more uses for it in corporate environments).

There is good news though - from the blog:

Quote:
Windows 8 reimagines Windows. That's a big statement and one that we will return to throughout this blog. It is also important to know that we're 100% committed to running the software and supporting the hardware that is compatible with over 400 million Windows 7 licenses already sold and all the Windows 7 yet to be sold.
If that's the case, we probably won't need the cloud unless we run newer applications that require its use.

Re: Welcolm to Windows 8;

As for XP with a SSD, nlite has an option or tweak to disable defrage when system is idle. That helps some too. I only have one comp with SSD and it is running win-7. Some day I will buy another SSD and try installing XPSP3 on it and let you all know how it goes. Hate to reitterate on this , but I wish (I know it'll never happen) MS would make SP4 with drivers and newer hardware support. LOL I guess they did it is called Win-7.
