Intel's Next-Gen "Sandy Bridge-E" Extreme Chip to Boost Performance by 12 to 65%
... According to a document with Intel's performance estimates of the Core i7-3960X processor (six cores, 3.30GHz, 15MB cache) seen by X-bit labs, the forthcoming chip for the LGA2011 platform is clearly faster than its predecessor Core i7-990X (six cores, 3.46GHz, 12MB cache) across a range of benchmarks despite of lower clock-speed amid the same amount of cores due to advantages of the Sandy Bridge micro-architecture over Nehalem/Westmere micro-architecture, quad-channel memory controller and other innovations. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/dis...Estimates.html

Re: Intel's Next-Gen "Sandy Bridge-E" Extreme Chip to Boost Performance by 12 to 65%
Article said they might refresh the line-up in Q2/2011. I wonder if this means Ivy Bridge. Also there will be 2 6 cores and 1 quad core. This has been a constant theme. Also all three chips are considered enthusiast because the 2011 socket is enthusiast platform so the 2 octo cores are unlocked and the quad partially unlocked (rumor).

Re: Intel's Next-Gen "Sandy Bridge-E" Extreme Chip to Boost Performance by 12 to 65%
I hope they can make a board that can actually deliver the estimated performance gain. Still too early for me.

Like stated (by you even isn't it) most software can be run on 2 different machines and yet feel the same

Re: Intel's Next-Gen "Sandy Bridge-E" Extreme Chip to Boost Performance by 12 to 65%
Ditto.
Even if part of their statement was true - so what? Great for 3dMark, can't really think what I would get out of it to make me upgrade again in less than a year. I'll try to control my urges and wait on the second or third iteration if I do anything. Between the purchase of a new truck, slide-in camper, and my Lenovo, I got to recoup some funds during the next year or so. An urge to upgrade my PC can easily be surpressed. ![]()

Enthusiasts are not the average - and it is that segment of the market they are targeting. Less me for now.
How's your new rig doing? You have a screamer there and should be set for awhile. Enjoy!

Great; CPU at 4.2, doubled the memory to 8 gig, upgraded the VC to a Rad-6850OC by Gigabyte.

Re: Intel's Next-Gen "Sandy Bridge-E" Extreme Chip to Boost Performance by 12 to 65%
The label "enthusiast" arrived and some of us got caught up in the hype!
