Re: The best current game platform?

One of the issues with console ports to PC is that usually you dont get many, except the most basic, configuration settings. Already I'm seeing gaming technology being held back by the console.

"Already" ???????!!!!!!!???????

You just started seeing this yesterday?????

Game technology progression should be such that the latest game just released will just run on the latest tech out. Instead, and this is what p*i*s*s*e*s* gamers off, is that the latest games are made to run on tech that is three years old (the console). There is no constant steady advancement as tech slowly and steadily advances.

They should have tested both at the same clock speed, Intel is faster but that was not a fair test! Intel was clocked 500mgz faster!

Its suddenly gotten worse over the past year to the point now where it seems to be held back.

Earlier on I dont think that PC gaming technology was being held back so much as just slowed down by the popularity of the console.

Carmacks comments worry me.

We understand the process; the developer must limit the features used by the game due to performance constraints of the console environment, but must develop more and more games for the console because thats where the easiest revenue stream is.

Quote from the article:

For many game studios, the decision to develop for the PC is revised on a project-by-project basis...

I think that has been true all the way along, but what I'm seeing recently is developers stating that console is their future.

When I saw that Max Payne 3 would include the windows platform I breathed a sigh of relief because, really, it was possible they wouldnt do it.

Here's Carmack on gaming

I want a game with 10 times the AI power.

And it is possible ... except for the lazy game programming industry.

They could do that by taking advantage of modern multi-threaded CPUs but, it would take a lot of manpower. Heavily multi-threaded applications are very hard to get right. If you have one infrequently used library that turns out not to be thread safe - you can easily end up with deadlocks when the applications is used in the mass market. Most gaming companies would need to rebuild their game engines/codebase from the ground up to make use of heavy multi-threading.

It's not laziness, it $$s.

Re: The best current game platform?

Well I for one never game on a console! Now this isn't some console vs. PC flame-bait but due to several reasons.

#1: I can't use a controller -- You guys don't know this because it never came up but I was born without the lower half of my arms. I don't have the fingers for console controllers . Imagine a Thalidomide kid with only the part of their arms to the elbow with these little nubs on the end (I call them my thumbs). I've had my trusty Microsoft Trackball (God, I hope this thing never dies!) and a keyboard for many years. With these two devices I can play any game from cRPGs to FPS with nothing more than re-mapping the buttons and keys !!

#2: I prefer the... well... intimacy of playing in my man-cave with the headphones on and the lights low. I usually play after my wife has gone to bed and have that "My Time".

#3: Access to user mods and fan patches.

#4: Graphics

The PC will always be my preferred platform for many years to come...

!!!!!!!LONG LIVE THE PC!!!!!!!!!
