The same issue occurred again recently, unfortunately. I had turned on my computer for later use. When I had returned, the monitor was off (typical power saving). I moved the mouse and the monitor turned on. An image from my screensaver was up. The screensaver cycles through the pictures in my pictures folder. One of those images was stuck on the screen. I tried moving the mouse, ESC, control alt delete, and control alt end (my own shortcut for a quick shutdown, to no avail. In short, the problem occurred again. The interesting part, it happened when the computer wasn't in use.

When I go out later, I will be running memtest for a good few hours. If that test runs smoothly, I guess I'll have to try reseating my heatsink fan and replying TIM to the video card. I'm dreading both of those operations. It's just meticulous work that I'm not up to for the moment (Christmas break and all).

I'll be back with an update.
The spambot problem seems to have gotten a lot worse here of late. One site I go to a lot had to stop new users from signing on till they could come up with a solution. Back on topic, I am leaning to a memory issue again. A minimum 4 hr run. This 1 pass 2 pass is not long enough. Here's a quote.. We have been forced to lock the forums to new registrations due to the violent increase in spambot registrations.
To protect the forums from these unwelcome intrusions, we have had to resort to temporarily locking out all new user registrations until the server can be insulated against these new vulnerabilities.
Please be patient while the server administrators work to fix the problem.

Re: Experiencing Freezes...

5 hours and six minutes. 2.3 memtests passed, no errors. So the ram is fine. Is there a way to test my PSU? I feel this may be the last piece of the puzzle. In the mean time, I will run prime 95.

EDIT: I'm going to let Prime95 run all night. We'll see what happens in the morning. I've tested the RAM, the video card, I've got 12.26 on my +12V rails. If this passes after tonight, I am at a complete loss.

Re: Experiencing Freezes...

On a side note, my system is old enough that if I wanted to upgrade anything, I'd have to upgrade everything.

MOBO only has PCIe 1.0. MOBO has 775 socket, so my E8500 Wolfdale would have to go. Ram supported is DDR2. So if I wanted to get a better anything, I'd basically be replacing the MOBO, RAM, vid card, and CPU. Jeez.

I know how it feels been there. It is sometimes like looking for a needle in a hay stack. The way I test power supplies is go buy a new one. Going to need one for the new build anywho.

Re: Experiencing Freezes...

466 tests completed in Prime95 after 12 hours and 30 minutes. 0 errors, 0 warnings.

So strange. I guess next would be an error check and defrag of the harddrive.

Well I have no clue what it could be now, how about your house electricity, is it stable, how about a good UPS?

I actually don't believe it is stable at all. At least, that's my guess just from observations in the past year. I've only been in this house for a year, but I've been wary about the power since the beginning.

The problem has existed for some time, not to mention a clean OS install, so I don't believe it's software related.

I've always wanted to get a UPS, but never liked their prices.

Re: Experiencing Freezes...

I've had a ups for years, first one was a Tripplite, then when I upgraded I just got this Cyberpower CP1350PFCLCD UPS 1350VA 810W PFC Compatible Pure Sine Wave, which is $159 at Amazon right now, they have all sizes, this one was bigger than my last and about the same price, whats nice about this one is it works with Corsair high end PS and has a watt meter which lets you know what your system is pulling from the plug!
