Upgrading and need advice

It's been a while since I've built a new rig but I think it's time. Since I really haven't been keeping up with all the new components and brands I need advice. I have always come here first since I trust ABX's "old-timers" more than anywhere else .

I'm looking at a budget of around $500 for a new CPU, motherboard and memory. I mainly use my desktop to game and general web surfing and I don't really overclock anymore. However, I would like to still have that option with whatever CPU/ motherboard I go with.

I already these parts that I still want to use:
- two EVGA 2gb 560s for SLI
- PCI-e Creative X-Fi soundcard
- OCZ 700w Power supply
- Viewsonic VA2431wm monitor
- two 500gb and one 250gb WD Green drives
- Memorex DVD-RW Duel Layer
- Windows 7 64

So any suggestions and which CPU (Sandy Bridge, Bloomfield, etc.), motherboard and RAM (DDR3 1333, 1600, etc. that's compatible with the motherboard).

Thanks for any advice or suggestions !

Re: Upgrading and need advice

You can do that easy, Asus z68 pro gen 3 mb, I7 2500k CPU, and 16 gigs of Corsair 1600 ram for $500. I think that would be a very nice rig, just my 2 cents.... Good to see you again and I hope you have a great

Re: Upgrading and need advice

Hi mindx2. Good to see you around.
If you want to upgrade right now, you could do as FV suggested above. Or, if you're willing to wait about 5 months, you could go with the next gen Intel chipset (Z77) and CPU (Ivy Bridge). Either way, I suggest you also get an SSD. A SATA III ~120GB from Intel, Crucial, Corsair or OCZ would do nicely. You can get one of those for ~$200.

Re: Upgrading and need advice

Do I really need 16gb of ram? Also, looking at SSDs but many choices. Which is better for the ASUS z68?

No not really but you can get it right now for $80, and it gives you some future proofing.

Really need 16GB? Right now? No, probably not. But at ~$80, why not?
Regarding the SSD, I'd look at the Corsair Force GT, Crucial M4, OCZ Vertex 3 or Intel 510.

Re: Upgrading and need advice

Intel, Cruical and Samsung 830 are very good, Skully has had very good luck with OCZ. OCZ is the fastest, Intel 510, Cruical M4, and Samsung 830, are a little more stable. I've had good luck with Intel and Cruical and just ordered a Samsung.

Re: Upgrading and need advice

I guess my question is are SSDs worth the extra cost? $200 for 120gb ?

It is one of the best upgrades you can do, and the prices have been coming down, but if you only have the $500 to work with go with the new mb and CPU, you can save $40 by going with 8 gigs of ram, and if you shop you can find a ssd for about $175.....

Re: Upgrading and need advice

This is what I'm going to order:

CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9R

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD

COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus RR-B10-212P-G1 "Heatpipe Direct Contact" Long Life Sleeve 120mm CPU Cooler Compatible Intel ...

SAMSUNG Black Blu-ray Combo SATA Model SH-B123L/RSBP LightScribe Support

Everything will cost around $550. I had to get a SATA drive as my current one won't work on these new motherboards ! I'm going to put off getting an SSD or another 8gb of ram for right now. I really want to keep my costs down.

Thanks for your help... it is greatly appreciated!!

Newegg has a sale at the moment, which may help you.

The Corsair Force GT 120GB is $150 after MIR and I think that motherboard is there as well.

Re: Upgrading and need advice

Alright, I went ahead and ordered a SSD as well. I bought a Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD2 2.5" 256GB SATA III. I felt I wanted a drive the same size as my current drive that has the OS on it.

Never thought I'd pay that much for so few GBs again. Felt like it was 1998 again and I was going from 150mb drive to a 250mb drive !!

Is there anything I need to know about installing a SSD? I plan on doing a complete install of Win 7 64 with the other new components. I will just backup anything I want to save on one of my other "older" drives before I start building.
