Damaged XP professional CD

I have always loaded a new copy of Windows XP by using the CD that came with the COA/product key. The disk appears damaged on my latest new build and OS load. Is the disk tied in any way to the key that came with it or can I use any previously functional XP cd to get the OS loaded and then use the new, unused key from the damaged disk for that new build? Is it fussy about service pack or disk/COA style?

Thanks,

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

I think OEM keys only work on OEM installs; however with all other flavors of keys/installs, it shouldn't matter.

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

In the case of OEM meaning a specific disk to a specific key or any oem disk to any OEM key?

Not a specific disk to a specific key. But, for example, any Dell key on any Dell install disc.

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

OEM keys for OEM install CDS, retail keys for retail CDs
Think that's the only important thing that counts

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

Why do you think it is damaged? XP will not install on new hardware.

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

I hung at the same spot twice during the install. I started checking for any hardware issues (overheating cpu, bad memory stick, etc.) but no obvious problems. I had one more new copy of XP left so I loaded that one followed by 100+ updates and a few hours of software loads so hardware issues are not likely.

Every one of the 15 or so XP copies I have used over the years are OEM but not branded meaning shrink wrapped disk, key and booklet but no PC brand association (like Dell). Sounds like when the time comes to use the key that came with the problem disk, I can grab any one of the other XP CD's that I have from a previous build.

I never tried using any known good XP CD for a new load/key because I did not know if a given disk was personalized for that key. Sounds like all CD's are the burned in bulk for that XP "type".

Thanks,

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

Use nlite and make an unattended install setup disk applying the key you have to it.

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

Thanks for the tip. I looked at nlite and it looks good but don' I still need the XP CD as the first step in the process, which leaves me at the same starting point looking for a working XP CD compatible with my unused key.

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

You can change the key with nlite unattended. Problem solved.

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

So you can set up the unattended program with any generic XP CD and use it to load an infinite number of unique product keys?

Yes, in the title you say you have a XP PRO OEM then in nlite apply anyone of your keys that are for that. Problem solved!

Re: Damaged XP professional CD

And actually.. since you didn't get the RELEVANT information.. you could look for an XP ISO (CD/SDVD image) Usually you can find those on torrents.. but my advice is to stay away from premade CDs/DVDs and use an untouched image.. easiest would be to put "MSDN untouched XP professional" or something like that in your search Also make sure it's the righe license CD (retail or OEM, there's also VL/volume licnse but I doubt you need that one) If you manage to find one all you have to do is burn it (if you have a burner)
And yes.. you can still use nlite that way if you'd like to
