What's New in Windows 8.1

From the horse's mouth:
Windows 8.1 - What's New, IT Pro Features, Devices, UI | TechNet

An excerpt:
________________________________________________
Modern UI experience

Variable, Continuous Size of Snap Views

You have more ways to see multiple apps on the screen at once. You can resize apps to nearly infinite sized windows, share the screen between two apps, or have up to three apps on each monitor.
Boot to Desktop

We have made configuration options available which will allow you to boot directly to the desktop in Windows 8.1.
Desktop and Start Screen

Improvements have been made to better support users who prefer a mouse and keyboard experience to access applications.

These are just some of the key features available in Windows 8.1 We encourage you to test out and try these features when you evaluate Windows 8.1 for use both in your work environment as well as at home in your personal life. Please note that Windows Server 2012 R2 may be required in order for some of these features to be available.

The 'new' start button launches the Metro start screen, NOT the start menu.

There's a non microsoft little program that gives you the start menu back, I think Stardock made it, I'll see if I can find it!

Here's one...
Welcome to Classic Shell

Here's another...

The Windows 8 start menu returns with Start8!

Thanks FV.
I know there are 3rd party start menu alternatives out there; however I should not have to (and don't want to) hack a Microsoft OS in order to make it work like a Microsoft OS.
I like hierarchical menu and directory tree structures. That's how my mind works. My Win 7 desktop is almost devoid of icons. I have only a few icons on the desktop and the quick launch bar; everything else is in the start menu. I like it like that.
Lot's of flat, ugly looking squares on a screen just doesn't work for me.

The only icon on my desktop is the trashcan, I use the quick launch bar for my favorite programs, so I'm with you...no metro for me, being able to boot to the desktop is enough for me to try 8.1, I have technet so I've already paid for it so I'll give it a try this fall!

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

Go ahead all. Build up Win8's Marketshare.

Windows 8 market share up slightly in May; Windows 7 gains ground - Neowin

Re: What's New in Windows 8.1

Not too interested in Win 8.1 now. I really don't see it surviving a cost to benefit analysis unless you have a touch screen! Just another revenue stream for MS.

When I get my next and final board, I just may get Win7 Pro (OEM) as I can then do some serious encryption. Would not want my pizza dough recipes all over the net.

They say here the Start button is back to list all your popular apps. Hmm. The only bait Win8.1 has for me is it is quicker and has better/newer hardware support like for SSD's I believe.
My Win7 install is so blazing fast I don't think I need worry about speed any longer. Booting directly into the desktop is appealing though.

Yeah, that "list" they refer to is the Windows 8 start screen with the tiles.

Haha. We all knew they would do this eventually. But its still not good enough.
Tiles and gestures are useless on the desktop. Fine on mobile devices, but not the desktop. So stupid trying to force us onto tablets.
Maybe in a few more years, say 3 to 5, the apps will all have migrated to tablets, but not yet.

Still don't see enough reasons to go to Win 8.1 from Win 7. Maybe next year.
